Following the success of "Sleeves of Desire", a second publication is now being devoted to the cover art of the label ECM, Edition of Contemporary Music, focusing above all on sleeve design from 1996 to the present. Since its founding in 1969, ECM has been dedicated primarily to jazz and contemporary classical music and is a leading international label in both these fields. ECM has also received acclaim for its unique cover designs, which have always been an integral part of its productions.

Over the years, the collaboration between Manfred Eicher, the label’s founder and producer, and designers including Barbara Wojirsch, Dieter Rehm and Sascha Kleis has produced an aesthetic of the cover that initiates a dialogue between the photographic image and the music. The search for a cover motif from a storehouse of possible images is presented in a few examples that shed light on how these visual worlds are created and trace their significance for the music. An illustrated catalog of all of ECM’s releases completes this publication.

A beguiling catalogue of hieroglyphs
By Philippe Vandenbroeck
Windfall Light follows upon Horizons Touched: The Music of ECM as an entry point in bookform to the engaging universe of ECM, the Editions of Contemporary Music, established by Manfred Eicher back in 1969. 40 years later it occupies a most respected place in the (serious) music industry.

Horizons Touched was a prismatic testimonial of the spirit animating the ECM project through the eyes of many of the musicians and collaborators who were part of the ECM story. What I learned from that book is that ECM is unlike any other record label. In fact, to see it only as an economic venture - with a mission to efficiently push "audiocontent" into the market - would be to misunderstand what ECM is about. Remarkably enough, ECM in itself is a work of art, a breathing and living whole that links a community of artists to a community of music lovers, driven by an ethos of love and respect for the music and the creative process from wich it emerges. For me personally moving into the ECM orbit has resulted in a genuine revolution in the way I listen. There is something in the way in which ECM brings music in the listener's personal sphere that forces us to take notice, to become an active part of the unfolding musical process rather than simply a consumer. The distinctive and authoritative ECM sound plays an important role in drawing the listener into the music. But it's not only a matter of sonics. Also the careful packaging, with imaginative artwork on cardboard sleeves and CD booklets, prepares us by creating, in all kinds of provocative and counterintuitive ways, the right mood.

Windfall Light is a book about the ECM artwork and covers. It supersedes the earlier ECM Sleeves of Desire : a Cover Story, published in 1996 and no longer available. As with the previous volume it's Lars Müller who is responsible for the editing and publishing of the book. In a short essay, he explains how the book has been conceived as a visual score, punctuated by five short texts, challenging the reader through an idiosyncratic rhythm of CD covers, session pictures, double spread cover photos and a few stills from JL Godard movies. The final section of the book is devoted to a full catalogue, showing each and every of the more than 1000 covers produced over the years.

What becomes clear from browsing through these pages and trying to make sense of this giant visual puzzle, is that there is, yet again, no "system". There are covers with pictures, with abstract graphic work, with text. There is colour and there are grey tones. There are sharp pictures and there are blurry images. There doesn't seem to be a trick to bring us, listeners, systematically in the right mood to listen to a particular piece of music. Most often the connection with the music is obscure. What we see is often provocatively un-photographic. We see a lot of scenes from nature, but hardly any genuine landscapes. Urban settings return on ECM covers in many guises, but pictures of architecture or cities as a whole are far and few between. There are motto themes but visually they are distinctly minimalistic. We see great expanses of (most notably) water and sky. The subarctic north is very present in its mineral pureness. We see urban non-places, filled with shadows and fleeting silhouettes. There is snow, that strange and amorphous element that is able to poetically transform our lifeworld overnight. ECM covers seem to tickle our receptivity to the music by withdrawing rather than to make a statement. Sometimes there is only the faintest hint of what the image is about. It speaks of transience and fragility. "The contrast of light and darkness, of proximity and distance, of clear etched contours and fuzzy boundaries presents the visible world as a reduced form of a richer reality that remains - and has to remain - invisible" (Hilmar Frank on Caspar David Friedrich).

A little bland
By Wayne
An earlier book, Sleeves of Desire, featured the album cover work of Barbara Wojirsch and Dieter Rehm. Wojirsch's work in particular set the bar for all ECM artwork to come. Windfall Light shows designs post-Wojirsch, post-Rehm. The New Series artwork is not at all bad, but it does look lifeless next to the earlier stuff.

I recommend collecting Wojirsch's original Lp sleeves, because it's fun and it's the way the work was intended to be seen. Windfall light may then be useful as a catalogue for collectors as it offers a complete list of ECM albums with small photos and the designer names.

Windfall for some, just Light for the rest
By fCh
Resting probably on the success of Horizons Touched: The Music of ECM and knowing that ECM-followers are a devoted audience, Lars Müller leaves us with a somewhat lesser volume here. Yes, the poetic imagery is in each and every full CD cover size reproduced here from the ECM's Contemporary Music series, but keep in mind, a) this is a softcover edition of a book with 447 pages, and b) the words have gone mostly missing. Usually, one associates such economy of means and words with some advertising catalog.

Before rushing to 'punish' the review/author, bear in mind that I'm only keeping with the spirit of ECM, and it is ECM and ourselves that I'm trying to be of service.

Huck is a young, naive white boy fleeing from his drunken, dangerous Pap, and Jim is a runaway slave longing to be reunited with his family. Flung together by circumstance, they journey down the Mississippi together on a log raft, each in search of his own definition of freedom. Their daring adventures along the way provide both entertainment and a satirical look at the moral values of the Deep South of the 1800s.

Amazing Edition of a Classic Work
By mp
Mark Twain's 1885 novel, "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn," has had a long history, during which it has been and still is both reviled and celebrated. Essentially the story of the picaresque travels and adventures of a young Missouri boy and his friend Jim, a runaway slave, in 1840's America. Taking cues from books like "Don Quixote" and Jonathan Swift's works, and a fraught relationship to Sir Walter Scott's historical romances and those of his protege, James Fenimore Cooper, Twain constructs a masterful first person narrative, through the eyes of 14 year old Huckleberry and a profound and hilarious satire on American culture.
"Huckleberry Finn" begins in tension - Huckleberry's fortune and wardship with the well-meaning widow Douglas has him in a bind. The widow wants to 'sivilize' him, taking him out of the happy go lucky, easy going lifestyle he loves, while his fortune of six thousand dollars has him living in perpetual anxiety of his father, a violent drunkard whose absence only makes Huck more anxious about his return. When Huck's pap does return, sure enough, Huck is remanded, more or less, to Pap's custody, and kept prisoner in a secluded cabin. Though he is no longer being 'sivilized,' his time with Pap becomes more and more tense and lonely, driving Huck to stage his own death and run away from Pap and from civilization. Early in his escape, on a small island in the Mississippi River, he meets Jim, a slave from his town of St. Petersburg, who has run away, planning to raise money in the north to buy his family out of slavery. Together, Jim and Huck form a friendship that will take them up and down and all around the Mississippi River.
"Huckleberry Finn" deals with a great many social issues, and none more interestingly than with conventional morality. With Huck, he effectively creates an outside position from which to view American culture as he sees it, with all of its pretentions and faults. Huck doesn't put much stock in widow Douglass' or Miss Watson's strictly defined notions of religion or morality - throughout the novel, we see him in constant conflict with himself over the fine line between what is considered right and wrong, and what is accepted as such. Huck's inner negotiations with prayer and morality, good and evil, are at the heart of the novel. His post-Emersonian, proto-Nietzschean manner of dealing with himself and his relationship to society is fascinating and compelling. His relationship with the runaway slave Jim, of course, is also a focal point of the novel - the ways in which Jim and Huck depend on and care for each other is both moving and of course, socially and politically suggestive and significant, especially in the historical context of the novel, both the setting, prior to the Civil War, and its published era, at the tail end of Reconstruction. Those who would be offended by racial epithets in common parlance during this time period would be advised to take historical context into account before railing against the novel's racial politics - if one gets unduly caught up in nitpicking such things, one falls into the trap of the satire, become a target in the process.
As satire or black comedy, "Huckleberry Finn" has at every moment the ability to make us laugh out loud at ourselves and at the situations in the novel - from the fraudulent actions of the King and the Duke, to Tom Sawyer's needlessly elaborate scheme to free Jim from slavery, to well-born cultured families feuding, to all the cross-dressing that goes on in the novel (and there is a lot of it!). Again, though, as black comedy, we may often catch ourselves laughing, then wondering, hey, that isn't very funny - this is the brilliance of Twain's artistic achievement; to make us laugh while looking critically at ourselves. A book that is uniquely American, Twain's humour, wit, and style contribute to give us a look at both Antebellum and post-Reconstruction America through the eyes of innocence and experience, to see how far the nation had come since the days of Washington, and how far it still had (and has) to go.
This 1998 Norton Critical Third edition of "Huckleberry Finn" is truly amazing. It restores the entire text from the manuscript, including among other things, the "Raftsman's episode" and all of the original illustrations. The supplementary materials in this edition are top-shelf also, with excerpts covering the controversy surrounding the novel, from its publication to the present. The critical selections are excellent as well, especially the incisive and yet startlingly personal essays by T.S. Eliot and Toni Morrison. This is probably the best current edition out there of this tremendous, and tremendously complicated American classic.

Twain at his best!
By Dennis Phillips
Back during my school days this was still not a book that was considered to be politically incorrect and so I was supposed to read it. As was far too often the case, I got by on little more than watching the movie version and never bothered to read this masterpiece. A few months ago I picked up a copy to put in my library for my grandson to use when he got old enough to go to school. Unfortunately this has been classified as a children's book and so I had little intention of reading it when I bought it.

After discussing a book about President Grant and Mark Twain with a friend I decided that I should read this book and I soon found out just how much of an adventure I had been missing. Twain's well deserved reputation as a storyteller is on clear display in this book from cover to cover. The reader is drawn into the lives of the characters to the point of being really disturbed when something bad happens to them. Sure, they steal and they lie but you will love them in spite of everything.

The story basically follows the adventures of young Huckleberry Finn and a runaway slave named Jim. Finn is trying to escape has father and the efforts of the townspeople to civilize him while Jim is trying to escape slavery. More to the point, Jim is trying to escape being sold down the river, which was always a worry for slaves in the upper south.

There is a strong moral point to this book as Huck slowly learns to love Jim as a friend and not think of his skin color. Early on Huck is worried about helping a runaway slave and isn't sure what to do. Having been raised in Missouri, Huck has been taught that helping a slave run away is one of the worst sins imaginable and that African-Americans are pretty much worthless except as slaves. It takes a while for the truth to come to Huck but he finds that he is determined to help his friend get his freedom, no matter what. Huck ends up risking his own life to do just that.

This book is a pure joy to read and I suggest you read it without looking for a political agenda. Just let the story flow and enjoy each word. The dialects used may slow you down a bit at first but they add so much to the flow of the book that they are quite indispensable. This is a wonderful story, full of youthful innocence and backwoods charm. Just one little warning though, once you start reading you won't be able to put this book down.

CLASSIC. I wanted a copy before new versions may be "abridged" to remove the "n" word. It's all a part of history at that time and is a classic to keep.

I was looking for a book that I could read from start to finish to get a good idea of how to use the programming environment that this book describes. I don't really feel like this book does a very good job of "self" teaching this subject matter. There are many good tutorials at the web site but I still really haven't found a good overall cohesive start to finish approach that a teacher of a class room class might use to teach this subject. Mr. Seagrave obviously appears to know the subject matter very well but somehow I'm having difficulty, as a beginner, not unlike a sixth grader might have trying to grasp college physics out of a text book. When learning a subject the teacher needs to start small and work up. Mr. Seagrave seems to start out big or I somehow fail to grasps the concepts for some reason but I'll keep trying.

So so, but nothing stellar
By Amazon Customer
I purchased this book hoping it would fill in a lot of the gaps in the on-line tutorials. I was disappointed to find that it's basically a compilation of those tutorials, in most cases almost 100% verbatim, with only a little in the way of educational material about the paradigm and concepts required to understand Android object oriented programming. It's a good 1-stop reference on the language, but not a whole lot better than the free Beginner's Guide on the B4A web site.

The Bankers' New Clothes: What's Wrong with Banking and What to Do about It, by Anat Admati, Martin Hellwig

The past few years have shown that risks in banking can impose significant costs on the economy. Many claim, however, that a safer banking system would require sacrificing lending and economic growth. The Bankers' New Clothes examines this claim and the narratives used by bankers, politicians, and regulators to rationalize the lack of reform, exposing them as invalid. Anat Admati and Martin Hellwig argue that we can have a safer and healthier banking system without sacrificing any of its benefits, and at essentially no cost to society. They seek to engage the broader public in the debate by cutting through the jargon of banking, clearing the fog of confusion, and presenting the issues in simple and accessible terms.

"Insightful."--Floyd Norris, New York Times

"[I]mportant."--John Cassidy, NewYorker.com

"Crucial."--Jim Surowiecki, NewYorker.com

"In their recent book, Anat Admati and Martin Hellwig convincingly make the case for much stronger and simpler borrowing limitations for banks."--Roger Alcaly, New York Review of Books

"Ms. Admati and Mr. Hellwig, top-notch academic financial economists, do understand the complexities of banking, and they helpfully slice through the bankers' self-serving nonsense. Demolishing these fallacies is the central point of The Bankers' New Clothes."--John Cochrane, Wall Street Journal

"Professor and journalist Admati and economic researcher Hellwig argue that it is possible to have a well-balanced banking system without any cost to society; weak regulations and lax enforcement is what caused the buildup of risk unleashed in the crisis. Here, they aim to demystify banking and expand the range of voices in the debate; encouraging people to form opinions and express doubts will ensure a healthier financial system as people understand the issues and influence policy. . . . The authors push for aggressive reform by outlining specific steps that can be taken to change our banking system for the better."--Publishers Weekly

"In a year of important books about the recent economic crisis, the most important one told us simply how to stop the next one."--Wall Street Journal, Best Nonfiction 2013 selection

"The most important [book] to emerge from the crisis. . . . The authors achieve three things. First, they explain basic financial theory with simple examples that any moderately numerate individual can understand. Second, they show that these basic ideas apply, with modest differences, also to banking. Finally, they prove that, in opposing them, bankers and their apologists have spun intellectual raiment as invisible as the emperor's new clothes. . . . Read this book. You will then understand the economics. Once you have done so, you will also appreciate that we have failed to remove the causes of the crisis. Further such crises will come."--Martin Wolf, Financial Times

"[P]owerful. . . . The authors persuasively argue that the solution is higher levels of equity capital throughout the banking industry to offset the impact of the implied government protections against failure."--Economist.com's Free Exchange

"An excellent new book."--Matthew Yglesias, Slate.com

"[A]n important new book called The Bankers' New Clothes . . . offers what the Dodd-Frank legislation mostly lacked: a simple and elegant solution to the problem of financial stability. They argue that banks should fund themselves with more equity and less debt--or, to put it bluntly, that banks should risk more of their own money, and less of everyone else's."--Christopher Matthews, Time.com

"An important book for readers interested in what has been done, and what remains to be done, when it comes to safeguarding financial institutions."--Kirkus Reviews

"This book's aim, decisively achieved, is to de-mystify the public conversation about banking so we can all understand how threadbare the industry is."--Diane Coyle, Enlightened Economist blog

"This title is a must read for management and human resource professionals within the banking industry as well as government policymakers. With its clear explanations, many examples, and analogies, the book is accessible to readers who do not have business backgrounds and who want to better understand banking."--Library Journal

"Ms. Anat 'gets' banking, and gets it better than most. The fact that she is ruffling feather relates more to the fact that she is questioning deeply held--yet hardly ever challenged--belief systems within the industry, than any lack of understanding."--Izabella Kaminska, FinancialTimes.com's Alphaville blog

"Admati and Hellwig have done something extraordinary. They took [banking] frustration and all its complex details and gave it a simple narrative, one that both explains what banks have been getting away with and what we might ask that Congress do about it."--Brendan Greeley, Bloomberg Businessweek

"Admati and Hellwig offer a simple prescription for this complex world."--Thomas G. Donlan, Barron's

"Anat Admati and Martin Hellwig are academics with a gift for taking the mind-numbing minutiae of banking and presenting it in a way that the average reader can understand. One by one, the self-serving protests of the banking industry against tougher regulations are lined up and struck down in The Bankers' New Clothes. . . . The authors map out the regulatory flaws that make it easy for debt-junkie bankers to get rich when times are good, and leave them hanging around protesting when times are worse thanks to their own recklessness."--Susan Antilla, Bloomberg News

"Admati and Hellwig explain, in layman's terms, some of the silly arguments bankers make for keeping to the status quo and preventing any new regulation of the banks from ever being enacted. And they do a great job. . . . Admati and Hellwig have made a gift to you. You don't have to go wrestle with banks' financial statements or their annual reports or their 10Q's. You don't need to pull out your old accounting textbooks or call your college economics teacher to have her explain to you again why debt leverage increases risk. Admati and Hellwig have done all the hard work for you. But, you have to read their book."--John R. Talbott, Huffington Post

"The Bankers' New Clothes is wowing critics of fragile banks with a simple and attractive message: Force banks to have much thicker cushions of capital and you can make them safer without paying any cost in terms of higher interest rates, less lending, or lower economic growth."--Peter Coy, Bloomberg Businessweek

"Financial regulation has become a hot topic in the wake of the recent crisis; many complex proposals have ensued, and a dizzying array of new acronyms and agencies has emerged. But in their new book, Admati and Hellwig make a forceful case for a classic and simple solution to excessive, unregulated lending: higher capital ratios for banks."--Finance & Development

"Admati and Hellwig don't just criticize bankers. The real strength of their book is that they walk their readers through the balance sheet and to a regulatory answer to the banking problem, an answer that's elegant in its simplicity and far-reaching in its potential to prevent and manage financial crises."--Randolph Walerius, Roll Call

"The Bankers' New Clothes (Princeton University Press) is a book that lays out the problems in banking revealed by the crisis and asks how to solve them. The authors, Anat Admati and Martin Hellwig draw upon accounts of the crisis and come up with some clear prescriptions based on what they see as the biggest problem--that banks are over-leveraged."--Nick Dunbar, NickDunbar.net

"Admati and Hellwig's analytical rigour is convincing. . . . The value of The Bankers' New Clothes is that it sets all out in clear and accessible terms over little more than 200 pages, without cutting corners."--George Hay, Reuters Breakingviews

"Increasing capital is the most sure-fire way of improving financial stability. Indeed, a new book--The Bankers' New Clothes--cogently argues that equity/debt ratios in banks could and should be increased drastically to levels more like those of ordinary businesses."--Richard Saunders, Financial News

"One can only hope that non-financial readers who want to improve the focus of their frustration will find their way to this book. Perhaps, then, policy-makers will start to feel pressure for smarter change."--Peter Morris, Financial World

"Many readers may feel their stomachs sink at the mention of capital ratios and systemic risk. But Anat Admati, a finance professor at Stanford University, and Martin Hellwig, a director at the Max Planck Institute for Research on Collective Goods, have done an admirable job in explaining how capital in the banking system works to absorb shocks, and how too little of it makes banks unstable."--Economist

"The authors have written the book for the enlightenment of the average reader who has no background in economics, finance or quantitative fields. But it can be read by anyone interested in banking--bankers, policy makers and researchers."--Business Standard

"[The Bankers' New Clothes is] a clearly written, sensible analysis of problems and cures for the U.S. banking system. . . . Admati and Hellwig take a lot of time to clearly explain the problems with depending too much on borrowed money."--Dale Singer, St. Louis Post-Dispatch

"The Bankers' New Clothes is a lucid exposition of the intellectual falsehoods deployed by banks to justify the ways in which they went about growing their business beyond any reasonable assessment of risk in the run-up of the crisis of 2008 and which they continue to peddle today. Admati and Hellwig cut through the debates about whether it was too little or too much regulation that was to blame, whether central banks could and should have acted faster, and the rights and wrongs of securitisation or separating commercial and investment banking, and go to the heart of the matter."--Will Hutton, New Statesman

"[T]hought provoking."--Heather Stewart, Observer

"[Admati's and Hellwig's] case that the banking industry still needs a shake-up is persuasive. And you have to admire their nerve in tackling the lobby head-on because, like the emperor in the Hans Christian Andersen fairytale, it wears a smokescreen of competence and confidence. Attacking the illusion takes courage."--David Wilson, South China Morning Post

"A clear and detailed call for banking reform. Arguing that the system is no safer today than before the financial crisis, the authors reject some bankers' and politicians' fears that further regulations would be too expensive and instead call for extensive change. Their starting place: Make banks responsible for their own mistakes."--Worth

"One of the greatest strengths of this book is that it clearly explains the issues for the ordinary reader. Financial reform shouldn't be left solely to Wall Street bankers and their captured policymakers in Washington, D.C., to decide. Regular citizens must make their voices heard, and this book will help them understand the basic terminology and concepts. I encourage everyone with an interest in effective financial reform to pick up a copy today. This just might be the most important book of 2013."--John Reeves, Motley Fool

"Offering a unique insight into banking from both an insider's and layman's perspectives, The Bankers' New Clothes is a welcome source of information in these unstable times."--Noori Passela, The National

"The Bankers' New Clothes . . . is critical and refreshing. Anat Admati and Martin Hellwig are a formidable pair and systematically demolish all the bankers' arguments on risk, capital buffers, reserve requirements and the claims that no further reforms are required."--Hazel Henderson, Seeking Alpha

"Admati and Hellwig walk banking neophytes slowly through how banking works, framing examples in a way that most people can understand: borrowing on a home. In very simple terms the authors explain how excess leverage is dangerous. Ironically, bankers are quick to point this out when examining someone else's credit prospects but not necessarily their own."--Douglas French, Freeman

"[T]he banks' argument that equity capital is expensive and that increasing equity capital would force them to pass up otherwise attractive lending opportunities has been systematically demolished, most notably by the academics Anat Admati and Martin Hellwig. In a new book they argue . . . that both the equity and debt of well capitalised banks are safer and thus cheaper, while a lower return is perfectly acceptable to investors in exchange for lower risk."--John Plender, Financial Times

"Since the 2008 financial crisis, there has been a continuing conversation on large banks and the idea of institutions that are 'too big to fail (TBTF).' Anat Admati and Martin Hellwig have provided a valuable contribution to the debate in their new book, The Bankers' New Clothes. . . . This is a timely and interesting book and one that is squarely in the middle of the debate over the future of the nation's largest banks."--Christopher Whalen, National Interest

"I've read almost all the major books on the financial crisis, and what makes this one of the best, if not the very best, is its simplicity and accessibility."--Emre Deliveli, Hurriyet Daily News

"The book pounds quite the drumbeat here: Force banks to borrow less (they should make up the difference through issuing more equity stock) and so inject sanity into the system."--Katharine Whittemore, Boston Globe

"In simple and accessible terms, the authors show convincingly that banks are as fragile and destructive as they are, not because they must be, but because they want to be--and they get away with it."--Shanghai Daily

"The Bankers' New Clothes . . . stands out from the crowd. For one, it does not beat around the bush--it is clear and straight to the point in an industry usually heaving with jargon. By using language the man on the street can understand, this bold book leads quite literally by example as it reveals insights into the banking industry and why it is in such a mess."--Nina Roehrbein, Investment & Pensions Europe

"This is the most important book to have come out of the financial crisis. It argues, convincingly, that the problem with banks is that they operate with an order of magnitude too little equity capital, relative to their assets. Targeting return on equity, without consideration of risk, allows bankers to pay themselves egregiously, while making their institutions and the economy hugely unstable."--Financial Times, "Books of the Year So Far" Summer Reading Guide

"The book deserves to be read by both bankers and policymakers as it debunks many of the myths that have been used to justify excessive leverage in banking."--Economic & Political Weekly

"This excellent volume provides an invaluable lens through which to view modern banking and the ways it has evolved to privatize returns and socialize risks. . . . Admati and Hellwig provide an accessible explanation of the inherent risks in the current banking system and propose sensible rules and reforms to make the system stable without damaging bank lending or economic growth."--Choice

"This accessible look into complex financial theory is a must-read for anyone interested in the ongoing debate over regulatory reform and 'too big to fail.'"--Jeanine Skowronski, Deputy Editor, BankThink

"[T]he Bankers' New Clothes makes a powerful case for why banks should stop borrowing so much."--Rana Foroohar, Time

"[B]uy this book; read this book; give this book to your friends; discuss this book; act on this book."--Carol Hunt, Irish Sunday Independent

"The Bankers' New Clothes makes a simple, powerful argument: that banks need to raise more capital. It is entirely persuasive that the extent of their leverage makes the financial system fragile, and it clearly and patiently demolishes all the counter-arguments made by the banks and their lobbyists."--Diane Coyle, Enlightened Economist

"The authors write well in simple language any adult who reads English can understand, and then support each chapter with exhaustive endnotes for economists and to prove they are not making anything up; the banks really are as bad as they say, and we can fix it."--Reference & Research Book News

"The Bankers' New Clothes, presents an interesting and fresh viewpoint. . . . The book's discussions about the weakness of free markets and capitalism make it highly relevant to readers of this weekly. It also sheds light on the role of government and the elites in the formation of regulatory policies."--Hemant Kanakia, Economic & Political Weekly

"In the growing literature on the 2007-08 financial crises, The Bankers' New Clothes is a significant addition. Admati and Hellwig identify low equity of banks as single most important cause of the crisis."--M. K. Datar, The Hindu

"This is a great book; I hope that it is influential."--Charles Goodhart, Economica

"[W]ell worth reading."--Steven Pressman, Dollars & Sense

"The text is well written and structured, and there is a good index to help the reader find the detail in both the text and the endnotes. . . . [As a] valuable contribution to debate and counterweight to opposing arguments, it is certainly most welcome."--Kevin Davis, Economic Record

"The book pulls off the trick of explaining a lot of technical points about banking in highly accessible detail."--Fool's Gold

"Admati and Hellwig's work is groundbreaking both in its accessibility and its clarity."--Ross P Buckley, Banking & Finance Law Review

From the Back Cover

"More than four years after the financial meltdown devastated the economy, our banking system remains resistant to reform and riddled with risk. The Bankers' New Clothes challenges us to question the status quo and to think anew about the transformative changes in banking that are needed to serve the public interest. This work should spur a long-overdue debate on real banking reform."--Phil Angelides, chairman of the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission

"Providing a sound analysis of the role of banking and its regulation in the public interest, The Bankers' New Clothes is free of technical jargon and widely accessible to all policymakers and all who are concerned about banking's future, which is virtually everybody. The book's clear exposition conveys a deep understanding of the pervasive place of banking in the economy and stands in opposition to the self-interested forces of obscurity."--Kenneth J. Arrow, Nobel Laureate in Economics

"The Bankers' New Clothes underscores that there is perhaps no reform more important and central to a stable financial system than capping the ability of financial institutions to take excessive risks using other people's money."--Sheila C. Bair, author of Bull by the Horns and former chairperson of the U.S. Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC)

"The Bankers' New Clothes accomplishes the near impossible by translating the arcane world of banking regulation into plain English. In doing so, it exposes as false the self-serving arguments against meaningful financial reform advanced by Wall Street executives and the captured politicians who serve their interests. This revelatory must-read shreds bankers' scare tactics while offering commonsense reforms that would protect the general public from unending cycles of boom, bust, and bailout."--Neil Barofsky, author of Bailout

"Anyone interested in the past, present, or future of banking and financial crises should read The Bankers' New Clothes. Admati and Hellwig provide a forceful and accessible analysis of the recent financial crisis and offer proposals to prevent future financial failures. While controversial, these proposals--whether you agree or disagree with them--will force you to think through the problems and solutions."--Michael J. Boskin, former chairman of the President's Council of Economic Advisers

"With extraordinary clarity, Admati and Hellwig explain why the banking system is reckless and distorted, what can be done to tame it, and how the politics of banking has failed the public. A must-read for all, The Bankers' New Clothes educates and empowers citizens to demand a better system and tells policymakers how to deliver it."--Jeff Connaughton, author of The Payoff: Why Wall Street Always Wins

"This entertaining book is an accessible exposé of the myths that financial firms use to perpetuate the advantages they get from government guaranties of their debt. A must-read for concerned citizens, The Bankers' New Clothes should be studied and memorized by lawmakers and regulators so they won't be duped by these false claims in the future."--Eugene F. Fama, University of Chicago

"Bankers have sold us a story that their risky practices are the necessary cost of a dynamic system. Admati and Hellwig expose this as a misguided and dangerous lie, and show how banks can be made more stable--if less profitable for the bankers themselves--without sacrificing economic growth. This brilliant book demystifies banking for everyone and explains what is really going on. Investors, policymakers, and all citizens owe it to themselves to listen."--Simon Johnson, coauthor of 13 Bankers

"At last! Two eminent economists explain in plain English what is wrong with banks and what needs to be done to make them safer."--Mervyn King, governor of the Bank of England

"This excellent book should be read by everyone concerned with banking systems. Legislation has not removed too-big-to-fail financial policies, continuing the mistake of making innocent citizens responsible for bankers' errors. The Bankers' New Clothes makes the case for increased equity capital and answers bankers' arguments."--Allan H. Meltzer, author of A History of the Federal Reserve and Why Capitalism?

"A clearheaded antidote to the ill-advised snap reactions to the financial crisis, The Bankers' New Clothes carefully counteracts arguments that the banking system is now more secure. With direct and rigorous analysis, Admati and Hellwig lay bare the ongoing misinformation about modern banks, and show what remains wrong with banking. This book is the voice shouting that the bankers are still not wearing any clothes. We should listen."--Frank Partnoy, author of Infectious Greed

"Almost subversive in its clarity, The Bankers' New Clothes is the most important book about banking in a very long time. It argues that as long as implicit taxpayer guarantees incentivize banks to raise funds almost exclusively through issuing debt, the global financial system will be subject to periodic destructive crises. The most effective remedy is to force banks to strike a better balance between debt and equity, but there have been many obstacles to implementing this improvement. Future efforts to regulate the financial system should start here."--Kenneth S. Rogoff, coauthor of This Time Is Different: Eight Centuries of Financial Folly

"With a knack for explaining complex concepts in a very straightforward fashion, Admati and Hellwig take readers on an immensely rewarding and often surprisingly amusing journey. Their brilliant book has much to offer everyone, from novices to experts."--Stephen Ross, Massachusetts Institute of Technology

"Admati and Hellwig are on a mission to teach citizens, policymakers, and academic economists about the principles of sound banking practice and regulation, as well as the pitfalls and immense social costs of failing to abide by those principles. Much economic pain--such as the U.S. savings and loan crisis of the 1980s and the 2007-2009 financial crisis--could have been avoided had policymakers and the economists who advise them understood and implemented crucial fundamentals."--Thomas Sargent, Nobel Laureate in Economics

"I like this book. The Bankers' New Clothes explains in plain language why banking reform is still incomplete, contrary to what lobbyists, politicians, and even some regulators tell us."--Paul Volcker, former chairman of the U.S. Federal Reserve and the U.S. Economic Recovery Advisory Board

"I regard The Bankers' New Clothes as the most important contribution to the analysis of banking regulation in the past twenty five years. . . . This book should be required reading for bank regulators, bankers, and legislators; it should also do a lot to demystify banking for the concerned public. It is beautifully written and forcefully argued. . . . [T]his is a terrific book. It took courage, a deep understanding of banking and finance, and first-rate expository skills to write."--Morris Goldstein, Senior Fellow, Peterson Institute for International Economics, from event introduction speech on February 11, 2013

Compelling approach to ending too big to fail, improve financial stability
By Contrarian
Excellent book written for a general audience explaining why big, highly leveraged banks are bad for the economy. Then they assert that requiring banks to raise more capital by issuing stock and less through borrowing will be extremely beneficial for the financial system.

This seems too simple to be true and the most helpful negative review has called it "overly simple". I strongly disagree. I think it is just simple enough. Simple is good. Complicated rules, such as the Volcker Rule, will be gamed, evaded and lobbied to irrelevance. The presentation in the book is somewhat oversimplified but there are lots of footnotes that go into greater depth and elaborate the point plus references that support them.

Why hasn't such simple logic been followed already? The authors describe how bankers benefit from the current system of extremely high leverage and from the implicit promise of taxpayer bailouts. They also argue that their proposal -- which they have been making academically and to regulators and politicians for a few years -- has been opposed by entrenched banking interest. Also, the general public doesn't understand these issues or of banking in general. They argue that this in part because bankers promote confusion. This book is written to combat that. "We want to encourage people to form and to trust their opinions, to ask questions, to express doubts, and to challenge the flawed arguments that pervade the policy debate. If we are to have a healthier financial system, more people must understand the issues and influence policy."

I think they do a great job of explaining the problem in very clear and understandable terms to people with no prior knowledge without oversimplifying. For readers who want to delve more deeply, they have excellent footnotes and references. I am involved in the field and find the references and excellent compendium of sources, some of which I already knew but some which I am very glad they have pointed me to.

Their central premise is that a simple measure -- requiring banks to raise more funds as equity capital -- issuing stock instead of borrowing -- would greatly improve the stability of the banking system. They also address the "bugbear" that doing so would reduce economic growth. Essentially, we can have our cake and eat it too.

In their words "if banks have much more equity, the financial system will be safer, healthier, and less distorted. From the society's perspective, the benefits are large and the costs are hsrd to find: there are virtually no tradeoffs."

The message is quite strong and they seem quite alarmed about the current state of affairs "Today's banking system, even with the proposed reforms, is as dangerous and fragile as the system that brought us the recent financial crisis." But their writing is quite dry and matter-of-fact. I think they do a wonderful job of explaining the essence of banking and the problems leverage creates to people without a lot of financial knowledge.

I found their message to be quite persuasive and compelling.

Addendum: Many of claims in negative reviews are refuted by the authors in this (fairly short) document.

Focusing the Debate on What Matters
By Banking & Finance
Financial regulation generally and bank regulation specifically can seem maddeningly complex. There is a specialized vocabulary. The economic concepts can seem far removed from the decision-making experiences of everyday people. The pace of innovation can be staggering. And the very variety of private institutions and public regulators--the proverbial alphabet soup of Washington in the form of the OCC, FDIC, SEC, CFTC, CFPB, the Federal Reserve, and others--can leave questions of what must be done to whom and by whom ostensibly unresolvable.

In the face of such complexity, the banks have a relatively simple solution: Trust Us. We are the experts. It is our business, and our self-interest, to master this complexity in such a way that maximizes both private and social benefits. And, after Dodd-Frank and Basel III, we can now promise that we will keep our failures in house and not impose the dramatic costs of financial crisis on you, the general public, again.

Admati and Hellwig, with lucid prose and a comprehensible agenda, slice through the opacity to present a clear challenge: the problems banks and, by extension, the general public face are not as complicated as they seem, and the "Trust Us" solution is naive and dangerous. The authors engage a number of issues central to the crisis in bank regulation--the politics, the international context, shadow banking, regulatory failure, and bank governance. And while no single policy proposal can resolve every problem that might arise in the financial sector forever, there are threshold issues that must be addressed first. In Admati and Hellwig's able diagnosis and prognosis, a major cause of the severity of the financial crisis and the path to sustainable growth and sound banking are simple: excessive debt is the problem; increased equity is the solution.

It's hard to overstate the contribution that Admati and Hellwig have made in this book. Depending on your perspective, the authors have done one of two things to the narratives banks use to justify their extraordinary reliance on debt. The authors have either debunked these narratives so thoroughly and irrefutably that the narratives are exposed as having no basis whatsoever in theory or practice. Or they have decisively shifted the burden to the banks and their representatives in the private and public sector to explain what Admati & Hellwig have missed. The early signs point toward the first conclusion: the few challenges to the book so far only repeat the same claims that Admati & Hellwig have so thoroughly debunked.

This is a book for all political stripes, backgrounds, and prior assumptions about the way banks and the financial system writ large operate. It will set the tone for every serious conversation about bank capital structures the world over.

Banking Industry Still in Need of Tighter Regulations to Make It More Self-Sustainable
By Serge J. Van Steenkiste
Anat Admati and Martin Hellwig clearly demonstrate that the lack of decisive reforms in the banking industry in the aftermath of the financial crisis of 2007-2009 will end up badly again for the U.S. and world economy.

Ms. Admati and Mr. Hellwig bluntly challenge the invalid reasons behind which bankers, politicians, and regulators hidden themselves to justify the absence of a more thorough reform of this essential industry. The authors rightly focus the core of their argumentation on the necessity to increase bank equity (called capital in the banking industry) to 20 percent to 30 percent of banks' total assets from the 3 percent lower limit for equity as a fraction of total assets as permitted in the recent Basel III agreement on capital regulation.

This significant increase in bank equity has several benefits:
1) Better capitalized banks will have a lower probability of falling into financial distress or becoming insolvent as a result of recognizing losses immediately on their non-performing loans.
2) Less leveraged banks will be more inclined not to take excessive risks in lending and not to stop lending during a sharp economic downturn.
3) Better bank capitalization will reduce the sizes and distortive effects of guarantees and subsidies that make it possible to allow debt to fund up to 97 percent of bank assets.
4) Higher equity requirements could push the largest banks to break up without being forced to do so by law or regulation under the pressure of their shareholders asking for compensation reflective of the risks assumed.

Ms. Admati and Mr. Hellwig recommend that banks reduce the dividends that they pay to their shareholders and / or raise fresh capital in the capital markets to fund this sharp increase in bank equity. Furthermore, banks can temporarily reduce the bonuses granted to their staff to help fund this increase in bank equity. In addition, the authors advocate for a change in the tax treatment of interest paid on debt to make capital funding through equity more attractive than it currently is.

The authors convincingly refute the claim that sharply increasing bank equity will undermine economic growth. Higher financial stability prior to 2007 would not have given rise to the sharp decline in output in 2009 and the resulting loss of output valued in the trillions of dollars. Furthermore, a better capitalized banking industry would not have resulted in the anemic economic recovery that the U.S. has had to endure since 2009.

In summary, Ms. Admati and Mr. Hellwig systematically reduce to rubble the convenient rationalizations that bankers, politicians, and regulators use to justify the unfinished business of reforming the banking industry thoroughly.

the hybrid approach: F# via C# interop
By Andre M. Van Meulebrouck
I like this book because it takes the only approach that I think will work towards gaining more industry acceptance of F#: interop with C#.

Don Syme really puts on his marketing hat (and aptly sets the stage for this book) in his brilliant forward by citing an incontrovertible case for F# over C# due to reliability: no more null exceptions! Hear hear!

Rather than see F# repeat all the man-hours of work that went into creating the designers and project types that C# has (and trying to precisely match all their behaviors and quirks); it makes more sense to leverage C# for those things. That is the approach advocated by this book. There are a lot of things you can do in F# that are ugly, infeasible, or ill-advised in C#; but F# needs C# interop because F# is far from self-sufficient.

The book author states (up front) that this book is for experienced C# developers who understand .NET development and OOP concepts. If you don't currently fit those requirements, get them; then get this book. (I've said it before, and I'll say it again: one needs to be better at C# than the typical professional C# developer, as a prerequisite, before you even begin to think about specializing in F#.)

If you are a C# developer and you have (or think you have) no interest in F#, I would still highly recommend taking a look at this book. (Here's another of my maxims: I think one needs to learn Haskell to really understand F#, and one needs to learn F# to really understand C#.) You will learn C# much more deeply from reading this book. (In particular you will really understand C#'s limitations and what functional programming has to offer.)

The OOP discussion in this book is superb: it shows how F# not only allows OOP, but does it far better than C# (and other OOP languages).

The discussion of design patterns is important; many F# books and materials don't have similar coverage.

While this book is very applied, C# friendly, and .Net friendly; C# programmers will also want to look at Real-World Functional Programming: With Examples in F# and C# (Petricek et al.) for its unique insights into C# and F#. (Note: Petricek is also a coauthor in Functional Programming in F#; which is not yet released.)

Conclusion: if you want to use F# for any type of realistic development (i.e. beyond toy problems and experimentation), this book is highly recommended.

Good for learning to develop C# in F#
By David A. McGinnis
I first saw this book when wanting to expand my horizons and try out F#. Coming from my current job where I use C# constantly, this book made sense to get. What I realized after reading through it, however, is that this isn't the right way to learn F#.

The book spends the first third of the time talking about the equivalent code between the two languages. By the end of this section, you can write F# code, but it is going to be C# in F#, not F# code. Meanwhile, you are constantly being shown things and told "this is something we will talk about later", since it doesn't have a direct corollary in C#.

Once you get to the F# specific sections, you breathe a sigh of relief, but even then, you aren't given any indication on how the new features could be used, or how they change the way you develop, so maybe you can use it when doing development, but you are still essentially developing C# in F#.

I'll admit that I stopped reading this book mid way though the second part, when he starts getting into topics that seem very esoteric (such as creating your own data provider), where I am not sure I have a need for that functionality. Meanwhile, I'm going to have to get a new resource to figure out just what F# code is supposed to look like, and what developing in F# actually means.

Unpleasant and Frustrating
By B Smith
F# is a great language, and desperately needs higher quality materials. Even if you tolerate the occasional error in the tables and code, the written explanations are barely passable English. I doubt this book was proofread or edited by a professional.

    Must have for backpackers
    By Scott
I am really avid in the outdoors and have been wanting to get into dehydrating my own food for meals. I finally purchased an Excalibur food dehydrator (amazing) and got this book as well. I do not have experience with dehydrating at all. However, every food that I have attempted has been coming out just fine following the directions in this book and my kids are loving the fruit leathers. One thing I really like about this book is the fact that it also explains how to dehydrate beans, tofu, grains, and dairy. A lot of dehydrating books don't include those things but those are staples for backpackers and really open up possibilities with your menus. Another thing I really like about this book is that it accounts for food safety issues related to dehydrating. For example, they recommend that only fully cooked meats be used for making jerky and they explain how to do that. One of the authors, Don Mercer is in food science so I really feel safe in making and using my own foods by following their recommendations.

After the book explains how to dehydrate all sorts of foods, pages 94-248 are recipes broken up by breakfast, main courses, sides, snacks, desserts, and beverages. There are more recipes in here than I'll ever be able to try but it's great to have variety to pick out my favorites and start experimenting on my own.

Overall, if you're wanting to get into dehydrating your own foods, for whatever reason, this book is an amazing value. If I had to start from scratch on figuring out times and temperatures for various foods I would have wasted a lot more money on food experimentation. This books helps a person just get down to business and start producing some great food.

And by they way, if you are new to dehydrating, I highly recommend getting the best dehydrator you can afford (and there are plenty of affordable ones). It will be well worth it and will give a better end result.

Similar Food Dehydrating guide as their original
    By R. Griffith
I really REALLY love their original Food Dehydration Bible, so when I came across this title with the same authors, I instantly decided this to be a must-have.

Upon delivery, I realized this was a pretty darn close replica of the Food Dehydration Bible and that a few recipes and section titles were rearranged to tailor it to more of a backpacker. While that's a great idea to cater to separate markets, I wish I had known this before purchasing it since there was barely, if any, new material.

Good book to have if you don't have the other...so just make sure you own ONE of the copies!

    Terririd recipes for camping!
    By Cookbook Lover
I love this book as it contains the best and easiest recipes for camping and wilderness enthusiasts like me! It is wonderful to know exactly what you're eating when you're away from the comforts of home, it's far more economical to make your own food (rather than eating pre-packaged processed food), and this book even allows ume to customize recipes in order to suit my family's taste.

The Complete Trail Cookbook contains recipes for breakfast - delicious Vanilla Cinnamon French Toast, Banana Nut Oatmeal, Blueberry Pancakes, etc; for lunch and dinner - flavorful Curried Chicken with Apples, Easy Mushroom Risotto, Fire-Grilled Fish, among others. It also contains side dishes, high energy snacks, desserts and beverages. Everything you need for that trip this summer.

This is THE definitive book for camping and trail food - what a great way to enjoy natural foods in the great outdoors!
