Hot men in Tights!!!

After Cascades emotional and fantastic ending, Gabi and Lia find themselves racing back to 14th-Century Italy. For Gabi she is racing back to her true love, for Lia she races back to save her family and an unspoken romance that has risen in her own heart. Coming back this time however will have its consequences, getting back home will be almost impossible and perhaps out of the question now that a life hangs in the balance.

Gabi knows her family will be making a huge sacrifice to stay in ancient Italy but also knows she tied to Marcello in a way that cant be broken, that is until events change the political atmosphere surrounding Marcello and the nation of Sienna. With a shocking wrench thrown into the plotting, Gabi's life may take a completely new direction than she ever imagined. While those who love her fight back and Gabi risks everything, the torrent that threatens to devour them all rears it ugly head.

My favorite of three, Torrent was a fast rollercoaster of emotion, shocking plot twists and a gorgeous well-done end. I cant review any of the stuff that made Torrent what it was due to not spoiling it for readers, is all I can say is that things happened that I wanted to happen and things happened that shocked me. Lisa threw in some added drama for Gabi that she needed in order to truly see what being with Marcello would mean, she also by the end grew Gabi into a fully developed character that shreds the last lingering thoughts of a 21st century teenager yet still maintains her spunk, bravery and courage.

Now that Ive finally docked the boat after being on a river that turns, spins, crashes, rips you under with its current and then gently calms you with its tranquility, I must say reading the River of Time series has been a marvelous adventure. I love these novels more than cake and that's saying a lot!! Lisa Bergren with her Jedi Master skills at romance, history that doesn't put me to sleep and action that jumps off the pages had me at page one in Waterfall, made me fall in love in Cascade and stole my heart with Torrent. This is a series that will stick with you long after you finish......

Amazing Book, Amazing Series!

I cannot tell you how excited I was to receive my ARC copy of Torrent in the mail. It was Christmas in August. I proudly showed it to my whole family and then HID it from my daughter. She came in later and asked where it was and I told her that I hid it because I was going to read it first. (You know she didn't have to wait too long because I finished it the next day.)

This is the third book in the River of Time series. I have loved these books since the first time I laid eyes on them. If you haven't read them yet, you really should. I found so many things to love all the way through.

Love, loyalty, time travel, action, knights in shining armor and a good history lesson... You just can't ask for more.

This third book couldn't come fast enough for me. I was hoping for all kinds of resolution and good things. I was not disappointed at all. It felt so good to end the journey with Gabi and crew. Happily. :) The book is well written and the scenes are etched in my mind.

I sure wouldn't mind reading another series starring Lia and Luca. I sure think there is more of that story to tell! Well, it could be that while I am utterly satisfied with the ending of Torrent, I still just want more.

I really don't want to give away the book and the twists so I'm just going to have to tell you to pick up these books, starting with Waterfall and Cascade and ending with Torrent. They are one of my favorite series. I will be reading these books again. I'm also happy to say that these books are clean. I can recommend these books to all my friends and even my daughter's friends. To me, that is huge.

My most sincere thanks to Lisa Bergren for writing such great books and letting me read them. Torrent comes out September 1st! I love, love, love the River of Time Series!

Torrent is AMAZING!

The River of Time is one of my favourite series so I was super excited to get my hands on an early copy of the final installment Torrent. And what an incredible read! It was everything I hope for and so much more.

Again Lisa Tawn Bergren has written another exciting and suspense filled plot. There are so many pulse pounding moments as Gabi and her love ones are never far from danger. But it isn't just action and adventure but also a insightful and meaningful story. It reminds you to appreciate every moment you have.

Gosh, I adore these characters. They are the type you admire and who inspire you to be a better person. It is always hard to pick a favourite out of this outstanding bunch but it would have to be Gabi with her strength, courage and kindness. She really has grown and mature so much in the series. Then you have Marcello and he is much more than just an Italian hottie. He is smart, loyal, brave and has such a beautiful and caring soul. In this installment Gabi's family plays such a large part of the story. It is great to read a book with such strong and positive family presence.

Now, talk about swoon. Torrent had plenty of heart melting moments. And I was surprised as another character tempted my heart away from Marcello (which I thought impossible). I wish I could say more but I don't want to spoil the book for you. I am hoping (and begging) that Lisa Tawn Bergren will decide to write this character a spin off series because I am in love again!

Overall, Torrent was amazing. My favourite out of the three and a perfect end to an unforgettable series. If you like stories full of adventure and romance then this is a must read.

A well written resource, but it's probably better for aspiring game writers

Write Your Way Into Animation and Games: Create a Writing Career in Animation and Games is a book that contains pieces from several other books printed by Focal Press, as well as some new material written by Christy Marx to tie everything together. The title says the book covers both animation and games, which it does; however, only the first nine chapters actually cover animation. The remaining seventeen chapters focus on writing for games. But it should be noted that there are times in the game writing section where concepts from the animation section are referenced, so the animation portion does need to be included.

The animation portion of the book contains writings by two writers: Christy Marx (who has nearly 30 years of experience developing, story editing and writing animation series and features) and Jean Ann Wright (whose experience includes work with Hanna-Barbera, working as a freelance animation writer, and having her own business as an animation preproduction consultant). Both of these women provide great insight into the basics of writing for animation, as well as providing information on writing structure, character development, and information and advice for anyone who wants to try to break into the animation scriptwriting business. While some of the information provided by both of these women overlap somewhat, it turns out that one of them may only give a brief mention to a concept, while the other provides more in-depth information to flesh out the basic concept. As I read this section, I felt that both writers' information was very helpful and useful for an aspiring animation scriptwriter.

For the game writing portion, five writers are represented: Terry Borst (who has credits for game writing, as well as for screenwriting), Timothy Garrand (a principal user experience architect), Nick Iuppa (a designer of instructional media and game-based training), Christy Marx (who was written for games in the PC, console, and MMOG categories), and Carolyn Handler Miller (a pioneering writer in the field on nonlinear entertainment). The game writing section goes into more detail about the basics, because there's a lot more that goes into designing a game as opposed to an animation script. It also talks about how to create a work for digital storytelling, how to write and format a script for a game, how to go about writing and presenting the narrative for games, as well as what to expect when working as a digital storyteller and tips on potential ways to try to enter into the business of writing for games. Like with the animation section, some of the concepts are mentioned by multiple authors in different chapters, but one author is able to expand on a concept that another writer only touches on briefly in their chapter. For someone who is interested in game writing, the information included in this book is quite helpful; however, it probably would make the most sense to someone who already has some kind of knowledge about videogames.

This book is definitely designed to be used either as a textbook for a class or by someone who is interested in learning this information on their own. Some of the chapters include exercises at the end of them, which is why I think this could potentially work as a textbook for a college class. At the end of the table of contents, it mentions there are multimedia components for the book, and it lists a website where the content is located. I visited the site, and discovered that in order to access the information, you have to register at the site; registering for the site is free. At this point in time, I haven't registered to access the multimedia components, so I can't comment on how they enhance the information provided in the book.

Overall, this book is well done and well written, and provides a lot of helpful information from professionals who demonstrate that they are knowledgeable about their respective topic. However, this book is probably a better resource for someone who is interested in starting a career for game writing. For someone who is interested in starting a career in animation writing, they're probably better off locating a book that focuses more exclusively on animation.

Great Resource for Beginners and Some Intermediates

Before I can properly apply the book (which is textbook format, though a lot more interesting and fun than normal textbooks) here's a little background. I'm a lifelong writer, just now getting serious about publication, with an abiding passion for film (particularly animation) and video games. While I'm not bad on the designing end of the spectrum, writing is definitely my stronger suit. I researched screenwriting and animation writing in my teens, but, figuring I'd learn all this in film school (all of which accepted me, none of which helped me pay) I never took it seriously.

Fast-forward a few years. I'm still in love with writing; it's still a creative pursuit at which I excel (assuming I work very hard and polish each piece); I still love film, but that expensive hobby understandably got pushed onto a back burner. A few weeks ago, I began to wonder seriously, not idly as I've done for years, about what I could do to write for animation and games. Coincidentally, I stumbled across this book.

"Write Your Way into Animation and Games" is a fabulous resource for beginners, and even intermediates depending on what you're looking for. I was frustrated by the first chapters, which cover screenwriting basics and how to craft a simple story. I read them anyway (in case skipping would cause me to miss something). And I have to say, the advice is clear, concise, brief, thorough, and necessary. It was material I'm highly familiar with, but once I banished the "been through this before" conceit, the refresher did very well for me. I'd urge anyone not actually working in animation (not that you'd be picking up this book if you were) to please go over it. It's a little irritating at times, but the information is still valuable.

After the basics, it delves progressively deeper in terms of technique and resources. The information on animation writing, from script format to page count to dialogue and action balance, was fantastic. Without setting out any unbreakable rules, it gives a very clear idea of expectations and guidelines, which is much, much more helpful that something along the lines of "you always have to do this exactly this way."

My only disappointment--and it was fairly minor--was a relative lack of gaming resources. Writing for games and for animation is obviously very similar, but I was more interested in games than in animation at this point. I wish it had been more balances, or even biased in favor of game-writing. That said, given the amount of information and resources in this book, that really was a minor disappointment.

"Write Your Way into Animation and Games" is set up like a textbook. At very rare times, it reads like a textbook, but it's still a lot more interesting than most of the textbooks I have/am dealing with now. If the format would, for some reason, put you off, don't worry about it. This isn't dry reading. The writing is professional but vibrant, and bursting with examples (which I definitely need.) I can't promise this will be a perfect read for any beginner. But, overall, this was a really great guide for me, and I know I'll be using it in the future.

Most Important For What It Says About Developing A Career In The Field

This book, which strikes me more as a combination of a textbook and a memoir (a la how-I-got-into-show-business vein), covers all of the basics of writing an animated film and certain types of electronic games. It does a good job of presenting in a very down-to-earth and comprehensive fashion all of the basic terms, the general structure of the animated story (whether geared for TV or live action film) and the more typical simulated game, and the key elements of any script associated with them. The book also adequately shows how writing scripts for animation and gaming is similar to and most important, different from the more typical screenwriting associated with movies and TV.

The authors go to great length in their discussion of the care and feeding of editors and producers. Make no mistake- this is probably the most important element of writing for these types of media. That said, along these lines, based on a careful reading of this book, my key impressions of this kind of writing are as follows:

1. Script writing for these media in particular is very cookie-cutter in both approach and execution. But then, all commercial writing is this way.
2. Work within these media feeds off of collaboration and socializing. In this way, it's very unlike writing for magazines or publishing the book, which is more of a solitary process. In the latter media, the writer has the option of interaction with others and has some control over the process and the final product. In contrast, with animation and gaming, social interaction and collaboration is a requirement. Additionally, writers in the medium often find numerous constraints imposed upon them, and typically have much less control of the process and little or no control over the final product.
3. While it is definitely more lucrative than magazine or book writing, these media are also more convoluted in their execution, and requires a lot more schmoozing and networking.
4. Finally, I agree with Ms. Marx's most critical and very perceptive insight, which all aspiring writers looking to get into these media should keep in mind:

"The most difficult thing to sell in today's market is an original concept."

Truer words can not be said.

About the Author
Mark F. Sanders has been a faculty member in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology at the University of California, Davis for 27 years. In that time, he has taught more than 120 genetics courses to more than 30,000 undergraduate students. Specializing in teaching the genetics course for which this book is written, Dr. Sanders also teaches a genetics laboratory course, an advanced human genetics course for biology majors, and a human heredity course for non-science majors.  His teaching experience also includes introductory biology, and courses in population genetics and evolution. 

 

Dr. Sanders received his Bachelors degree in Anthropology from San Francisco State University and his Master’s and Ph.D. degrees in Biological Anthropology from the University of California, Los Angeles.  Following graduation, he spent four years at the University of California, Berkeley as a post-doctoral researcher studying inherited susceptibility to human breast and ovarian cancer. At UC Berkeley he also taught his first genetics courses. Since coming to the University of California, Davis, Dr. Sanders has maintained a full-time teaching schedule and promotes academic achievement by undergraduate students in numerous ways, including as an active student advisor, through his on-going role as the director of a long-standing undergraduate student program, and by past service as the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Academic Programs in the College of Biological Sciences.

 

John L. Bowman is a Professor in the School of Biological Sciences at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia and an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Plant Biology at the University of California, Davis in the US. He received a B.S. in Biochemistry at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Illinois in 1986 and a Ph.D. in Biology from the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, California.  His Ph.D. research focused on how the identities floral organs are specified in Arabidopsis (described in Chapter 20).  He conducted postdoctoral research at Monash University on the regulation of floral development.  From 1996-2006 his laboratory at UC Davis focused on the developmental genetics of plant development, focusing on how leaves are patterned. From 2006-2011 he was a Federation Fellow at Monash University where his laboratory is studying land plant evolution using a developmental genetics approach.  At UC Davis he taught genetics, 'from Mendel to cancer', to undergraduate students, and continues to teach genetics courses at Monash University.

Welcome to your nightmare

Someone commented that this is a gem for graduate level study--maybe it is. However, for an undergraduate survey course in genetics, this book is a mess that will leave you frustrated and perplexed without feeling like you've actually learned anything. Our professor made a deal with us: most of the exams will come from the back of chapter problems. Fair enough, I thought. However, I soon began to realize that the problems AND answers were so wordy and disorganized that what should have been a boon was just confusing me even more and leaving me directionless before an exam. Part of the problem is that this text is too detailed. Another huge problem is that the solutions manual is riddled with wrong answers. After the semester was already halfway over, our professor provided us with the errata for the solutions manual and it was disorganized and incomplete as well. For a class that could have been illuminating and genuinely great, this book single-handedly made it its mission to keep the class average below 50. What a piece of garbage. Correct and edit, please.

Avoid if you can

This book is utter garbage. I can't get through a chapter without having to check the internet for corrections and mistakes that are littered throughout this book. Not to mention the lack of proof reading in the end of chapter questions. This book made Genetics hell for me, and I despise that it was a required text. Maybe the editors should fix the problems instead of making new editions of this trash.

Avoid at all costs

This is a terribly written textbook. It reads like an instruction manual, and takes two pages to get the idea or concept. My professor was repeatedly frustrated with the structure and formatting. I'm just baffled by how awful this book is!

If you are a descendant of Christian Wenger, these books are worth every penny spent!!!

The book explains how to use and understand along with biographies of the Wenger descendants of Christian Wenger the immigrant of 1727. Included are many biographies of these descendants and their genealogies. Included in this book are photos of Bibles and Records along with much extensive research of the Descendants of Christian Wenger. Along with this LARGE INFORMATIVE BOOK is an Index to reference for easy access to information.

In the front of the book is an area for you to add your personal family information!!!

If you are part of the over quarter-of-a-million who a descendant from Christian Wenger, the Progenitor who came from Europe to the United States, this book is a must have for your Ancestry Library Collections!!!

"The Wenger Book" is one of the hardest books to find

This is one of the hardest genealogy books to locate. It took me looking for about 10 years to finally find one. It has a wealth of history on the Wenger family. Don't miss out if you have an opportunity to purchase one.

A well layed out book

This book has many tables and lists of all the statistics in the Fallout Tactics universe. It also gives information on comabat, charactors (and charactor building), missions, enemies, perks, skills, MULTIPLAYER, and tips on how to win your way to victory. It was easy to understand, the good thing was that it didn't tell exactly what to do. This left the game open, not a complete walkthrough (you know, do this, do that... no fun!). The book really helps make the Fallout expirience ten times better. Buy this book and make the most out of your game.

Passable as a strategy guide...

As a kid I always enjoyed reading the strategy guides to my favorite console games, like the Final Fantasy series. Usually these strategy guides had all the information on the actual gameplay/items/locations, plus added touches like 'bonus features' or 'secrets' and even tidbits of information about the game that owners might find interesting. The pages were in color and you could almost read the guides like a good magazine or even a book.

Not so with this guide. As soon as I got this guide in the mail, I realized I would be disappointed. The quality of the printing is low; small pages, black & white print on normal computer printer paper. There are no pictures of items & the descriptions of them are extremely brief and not really useful. The book covers the missions themselves in a brief fashion (a couple pages per mission) with a general outline of the objectives & strategies, with a couple fuzzy screenshots mixed in.

Nowhere is there specific vendor information, ANY information on random encounters or special encounters (which the book bluntly lies about on the back cover by claiming it does have this information), or a tips/tricks section -- of which there are plenty to discover in Fallout Tactics.

All in all this is a mediocre book and you really shouldn't buy this unless you are some kind of avid 'Fallout' merchandise collector. You are better off going online to look at a F.A.Q. or Walkthrough on the game; this book is cheaply made and only covers the most basic essentials of playing through the game.

I sincerely hope no one would be crazy enough to buy the strategy guide at four times the price of the game. It is a good game, but you can figure out most of the stuff that is in the guide for yourself.
