Sounds like real Jazz

This book contains 19 standards arranged as jazz piano solos. The solos are not the standard sheet music for these songs. They are arrangements at an early to mid-intermediate level, very clean (no big runs or fills) yet very full sounding. The chord voicings are jazz oriented. So even with no improvisation, the music sounds like real jazz. The chord symbols are there (some nice extensions and substitutions) so you can learn them and improvise if you want, however, the songs do not include a written out improvisation. The nice thing is that if you just want to learn a song as a recital piece with no improv it will still sound great. For the money this is a great book. The notes are all there, just add the swing.
The arrangements are by Thomas Coppola. The following songs are included:

The best book in this genre of piano standards

Jazz Standards for Piano Solo arranged by Tom Coppola, is the best book in this genre. I never do reviews, but felt compelled after reading other reviews of buyers who were not five star pleased.

First, the songs: Just because your tastes are not sophisticated enough to recognized the quality of the selections, doesn't mean the songs aren't first rate - they are. If you are unfamiliar with these songs, again, don't take away stars. Spend the time and learn them - they are beautiful, with good strong melodies by some of the best songwriters.

The songs in this book are tunes that someone like Bill Evans might play, and has played. The arrangements are simple, (but not simplistic), uncluttered, no solo lines written in, no busy patterns added. These tunes stand on the tonal quality, the lush sound of the voicings, something that one would like to hear late at night in a quaint piano bar; they are moody, pensive, a joy for the ears.

Secondly, the left hand: Players who have done even a little work on chord voicing know that if you can't reach a full tenth, you have three options - 1.) play the root and the 3rd, which is the same note as the 10th but an octave lower. 2.) roll the notes, playing them staggered, one after the other. (Joey Alexander, the kid jazz wiz, has small hands and does this a lot.) 3.) just play the root. Whatever you do, don't whine about these arrangements. They are extremely well thought out, concentrating on the overall sound, the mood of the melody, the beauty of the chords and the way they are voiced.

I own 7 of the Hal Leonard Jazz Piano Solo books (Jazz For Lovers, Jazz Ballads, Cocktail Jazz, Antonio Carlos Jobim, George Gershwin, Silver Screen Jazz, and Bill Evans) and although they are well done, most of the arrangements are overly complex, (with solos that aren't necessarily what the player would create), sometimes to the point where it's hard to hear the melody.

This book has the feel of what we expect in these types of songs. Tom Coppola has arranged these songs so that even an early intermediate player can get the "essence" of Bill Evans.

If you play for others, these songs will get you complements like "nice, beautiful, and tasteful". If you play for yourself, these arrangements will be a treat for your ears. Sometimes, the chord changes and voicings are so pleasant, I find myself just repeating those passages. And late at night, under the headphones, you will be transported to piano Nirvana.

All in all, for under ten bucks, this book, Jazz Standards for Piano Solo by Tom Coppola, will give you a solid 19 songs for your repertoire. I wish Tom Coppola would do more books like this one; I'd buy them all.

This was wonderful music to learn. The chords are lush. For those of us new to jazz piano, it's a fascinating change. I do want to say that I think some of this music is beyond the reach of early intermediate pianists (and a couple of the chords in "Alice in Wonderland" are literally beyond the reach of most human hands), but it's OK for solid intermediates. Well worth buying.

This author is a financial modeling pioneer

John Tjia’s involvement with the first financial projection model on a mainframe several decades ago and his ongoing work building models for prominent financial sector firms gives him a unique perspective. His book provides straightforward steps for creating integrated financial statement projection models and helpful explanations of the related operating, investing and financial variables that projections are based upon. As with any good introductory text there are plenty of definitions for new terms/concepts such as: one-off model versus template model; integrated financial statement projection model; iteration; the revolver and circular references. Emphasis is also placed upon streamlining the modeling process by determining whether the model under consideration will be: an annual or quarterly model; full-blown or quick & dirty model and what questions will it answer.

A “best practices” chapter lists common sense refinements that make spreadsheets more readable such as color coding input cells and having one location for all input values that are referenced throughout the model using absolute and mixed cell addresses. At the midpoint of the book a simple model is introduced, the five subsequent chapters each add a layer of complexity to that model. The book ends with two chapters that introduce Visual Basic in a thorough yet interesting manner.

Please note that since the first edition of Tjia’s book predates other Financial Modeling textbooks, he makes no assumptions about his readers having any background in financial modeling and explains everything in great detail. Hence the acquisition of Tjia’s book will significantly enhance your arsenal of financial modeling reference materials.

Credible, instructional, and valuable

When reading an instructional book one occasionally gets the impression that the author might not have much hands-on or professional experience. That is certainly not the case with "Building Financial Models". Throughout this introduction to financial modeling, one can sense that the author has worked extensively in the field. His list of tips, best practices, pitfalls to avoid, when to use - or not use - a certain function all seem to hint at hard-won knowledge that could only have come from years of experience and experimentation. In the same way that every regulation on a ship is the result of a disaster, I'd guess every tip or piece of advice he gives was also the result of a mistake being made. It's a very humble and thoughtful approach that lets the reader know there are many ways one can introduce errors into models - and how to best avoid doing so. The author made the various mistakes and notated ways to avoid them here with the hope that we won't repeat them. The result is a book that comes across as very credible and reassuring. One quickly realizes that the author is an expert about the subject which he is writing.

While this book may be viewed as an introduction to modeling, my guess is even experienced modellers will benefit from reading it - even if only a quick skim. There are almost certainly going to be a few techniques of which one is unaware that will make one go "Ah, that's a good idea!" and that will likely save time and frustration. There is value in this book for many levels.

For one new to this subject, one may be surprised at how much of modelling - and the book - is based around Excel. In the financial world, Excel is the giant when it comes to modelling. If one wants to learn financial modelling, one needs to learn Excel. The two can be considered inseperable and the author understands this. The plentiful advice given on using Excel should not be overlooked - even if it at times seems minor. Chances are the author included what he wrote with good reason and skipping over - or not fully paying attention - is inviting eventual peril.

Besides the use of Excel there is the substance of the book that one would expect. Income Statements, Balance Sheets, Cash Flow, Retained Earnings, Plugs, Revolvers, etc. These are explained in a way that even a complete novice to the field should be able to understand. Throughout the book there is a very logical flow in how concepts are taught. It's very confidence inspiring as one gets the feeling that a lot of time and thought went into developing this book.

After an introductory look at Excel and an overview of financial concepts, the reader is encouraged to build their own models with step-by-step instructions. I'd highly recommend spending the time doing so as this is where the most value for a novice will be gained. The hands-on work - inevitably making mistakes which one learns from - will allow one to see how the various parts of a model are connected and what's possible. The author has downloadable Excel files on his site of the examples in the book. I'd suggest just using those as references for one's own work. Simply glancing at those will not give the same rewards as actually building one's own models.

In the professional world, one occasionally comes across an expert whose experience and knowledge makes one think, "You really know a lot about this field. You should write a book and share what you've learned." "Building Financial Models" strongly gives the impression of being such a book.

I used MS Office 2011 while going through the book which itself uses screenshots from Excel 2007. The differences between the images of the book and the current Excel are mostly superficial. Occasionally, it takes a small amount of time to track down the function needed. It's not a big problem.

However, using a Mac instead of Windows will be a nuisance as many of the time-saving keyboard shortcuts mentioned in the book are completely different or non-existent on a Mac. I'd highly encourage using Windows while going through this book.

Not exactly the textbook I want

I was looking for a textbook for my own Financial Modelling class. My goal was to find something that describes creating a financial model centered on cash flow, bottom up approach (from business processes to money) and is lean and flexible. For Internet startups that primarily use my class, this is a must: they have no history, no physical assets or debt and have to evaluate dramatically different strategies. I went through this book cover to cover (Kindle ed) and did not keep it.

What this book is good for:

- RATIO ANALYSIS. If you want a quick reference on how to compute ratios and what they mean - this book has a great chapter on it.

- PERIOD MODIFICATIONS. Different projections and discounting for end of period, mid-period (with proper formulas and even switches) is very useful.

What this book is not good for

- CASH FLOW. It is kept out of the picture, introduced late and is built from previously constructed BS and IS. For a large pre-existing business, you can get around with it, but for a situation where you are building a new business or doing a credit check, taking away WC adjustments (caused by accrual accounting) and noncash like D&A is only part of the story. You do want to see CF-O, CF-I and CF-F structured like by line. You do not get it.

- PLUGS. As some reviewers previously mentioned, you DO NOT use plugs. Ever. It is tantamount to changing a problem to fit the solution. Yes, the alternative is to project the CF coming from business operations, so that's what you should be doing in first place.

- FORECASTS. It's extrapolation by implication based on past history. No attempt to relate sales to advertizing spending or costs to manufacturing process, for example. A company is treated as an almost black box. Not good for internal startup use at all!

- M&, PE A AND LBO ANALYSIS. The way statements are done implies they are intended for old manufacturing companies undergoing capital transactions, which is fine. But the book stops short at showing how the models are used in transactions, what are the questions asked, etc.

- DECISIONS. How do you compute in Excel "DO PROJECT A, NOT B"? The book bypasses this ABC of DCFs.

- LEARNING ADVANCED EXCEL. Third of the book is Excel for beginners but this could have well been relegated to other book. We want to see how Excel is used for financial projections. First thing anyone should learn is that inputs should be kept separate from outputs, and outputs are not reports (i.e. finished printable financial pro formas). This book does not input values inside formulas, but reports and outputs are the same, and inputs can be scattered all over the model. Go find them. Named ranges are not used, cell validation (which is a way to make protected drop down list btw) appears in last chapter. In other words, the model a book advises to build is a product that an analyst can make fast but will have hard time sharing with a team - which is what models are predominantly for.

Surprisingly, this book is written by a former JPM model czar. It is the way JPM actually build its internal models? Can't believe it.

So far, will remain stuck to my Robert Higgins's Analysis for Financial Management (also McGraw, an amazingly clear and useful text) and keep looking.

Chapters 1-6 are really good and worth a read.

The book provides a brisk overview of dataflow and reactive programming systems. Chapters 1-6 provide enough information to have informed discussions about data flow programming, actor model, flow-based programming, and communication sequential processes. From Chapter 7, the book tries to get into details and it kinda fails as the approach is rather informal and it only gets into the details of synchronous and asynchronous systems. Further, I wasn't sure about the target audience of these chapters.

Essential!!

This book is simply great...it can be compared with the also essential book "MPLS Enabled Applications" from Lucian Lucek and Ina Minei, but adding a practical (and interoperable) point of view. And not only for MPLS technologies (including the last MPLS trends), the authors successfully describe the way the SDN (and of course NFV) is changing the actual IP/MPLS networks, not only for Service Provider environments but in Data Centers. Last but not least, this book can be a good guide for understand technologies, designing networks, but also for students that are preparing "Internet Expert" Certifications, like CCIE-SP and JNCIE-SP. Congratulations!!

MPLS Bible 2.0

MPLS in the SDN Era: Interoperable Scenarios is a great book. For me, MPLS enabled Applications-Volume 3 is MPLS Bible 1.0 and this book as Ivan Pepelnjak ([...]) says rightly is MPLS Bible 2.0.
Today, there are Networking books in the market just with a single vendor approach with their OS, network topologies and configurations. But, there is not one book with Inter-operable network scenarios. Today's SP Networks actually also are multi-vendor and not just a single vendor.

As a Network Engineer at a SP and a IP/MPLS Lab geek out of interest, I have a job of testing interoperable network scenarios and making multiple vendors work products work smoothly. It's one heck of a job. Hence, I realize how brilliantly Ato and Krzysztof have worked hard to bring up this awesome book with Interoperable Network scenarios with Juniper Networks & Cisco Systems.

This book comes with a title, examples and topologies of the interoperable networks of JunOS and IOS-XR, two of the Best Networking companies with great scalable Network Operating systems which makes my life easy and all other Network Engineers’ who deal with complex networks which need to interoperate and work together. I simply enjoy reading and labbing up the scenarios from this book.
This BOOK could be a potential go-to book for both JNCIE-SP and CCIE-SP.

I believe it’s a must-have book for all Network Engineers working in Service Provider Industry dealing with MPLS backbone Networks leaning towards SDN/NFV stuff.

An Introduction to Stoic Thought, Direct From One of Its Best Practicioners.

Introductions to Stoic thought are readily available, both in print and online. There's even a "Philosophy for Dummies" book that can tell you all about it. So why do we need another one?
Stoic Paradoxes is philosophy for adults. It's an "introduction" in the real sense, because it shows you the world as the Stoic philosophers saw it, not as it's viewed through the eyes of some 21st-century philosopher. Curtius buttresses Cicero's essays with lengthy introductions to the author and the times he lived in, as well as copious notes, but the essays are intended to stand by themselves. It's obvious from reading them that Curtius's translation puts heavy emphasis on maintaining the somber tone and personality of the original.
While I don't speak Latin, I am a professional translator, and the translation is excellent. While it's quite readable, the balance is tipped towards accuracy over clarity or brevity, to ensure that as little of possible of the original's nuances are lost. Cicero was a Roman, writing to an audience of Romans, and so he uses many historical and contemporary references to drive his points home. Each of these references is footnoted, and if you aren't very familiar with Roman history, I'd suggest buying the kindle version to make it easy to flip between them and the main text.
The Stoic Paradox essays themselves are fascinating reading. The Stoic value system, as Cicero describes it, is completely different from anything we have in the modern world. For example, Cicero isn't like a Buddhist ascetic who gives up everything he owns to go live in a hut and pray, or a Christian monk who says "Store up your treasures in heaven." He acknowledges the value of worldly goods, and seems to have done quite well for himself. (Curtuis's essay has him being executed while being carried in a litter, and in the first paradox, he writes, "I will never say that a man who has lost cattle or good furniture has not lost something valuable.") But at the same time, worldly possessions come and go, and a man should avoid getting overly attached to them. Curtius' translation memorably describes covertousness as a "dominatrix", an overbearing, violent woman who forces men into slavery.
Despite its relatively short length, this book is well worth the price for anyone interested in learning more about ancient philosophy, straight from the mouth of one of its best practitioners. I recommend it highly.

Approachable Stoicism, Still-Revelant

A long overdue, easy-to-read translation of Cicero's work for modern audiences. The ever-dependable Curtius approached his task with discipline and care, aiming for accuracy in translation, with the result that the author's voice is clearly-retained. Included are essays that expand upon his life and historical position, along with many easily-referenced footnotes to add meaning and clarity to milieu-specific references within the original text. Combined with his own words, a portrait arises of a complex and fascinating man, passionate in his beliefs whilst keeping a close watch that his passions didn't consume him. Cicero asks a lot of his audience, but it's also self-evident he does so because he thinks very highly of them.

It's fascinating to think that although Cicero and I are separated by Millennia, our fundamental observations of life in very different time periods are unchanged, which suggests there's true wisdom in his words, particularly-applicable for those who find themselves emotionally-anchored in a time when emotional reactivity and hysteria is both encouraged and celebrated through all levels of society.

Curtius can take pride in offering readers such a valuable translation of a still-relevant work.

Another great read from Alana Sapphire.

This is an amazing short read.
I fell in love with Rick right from the beginning. By the way, where can I get one of him for my own? He made himself who he was by sleeping around and not getting attached and not dating anyone from the company. Kelly is a determined young woman who has had a thing for her boss's boss. She also lived by a rule when she works, no dating a co-worker and just to maintain friendships with whoever she encounters. Until one day they cross paths and things change for them both.
Kelly is a strong willed character, I love how Alana makes her females come off as strong and independent, that's what got me hooked on her writing in the first place. Rick is a soft but rather demanding male, yet another quality I love about her work. Her ability to throw in a bit of a twist in this book made me read the whole thing in 1 sitting. I would have loved to have read more about them. I am looking forward to reading more from Alana in the future. Keep up the good work!

Short, sweet and oh so steamy love story. Triple Check.

Honestly, I wasn't entirely sure what I was getting into when I picked this book up to read it earlier. I only knew it was going to be a short read and it definitely was. It was paced quite quickly, but honestly, it was sweet.

Kelly has been crushing pretty hard on her boss's boss for like ever, though up until the beginning of this story it's been from afar as they've never had the pleasure of meeting. But once they do, once Rick sees his woman, the chemistry, the need and the want, well it's off the charts. He's consumed by her just as much as she is with him, and with the emotional got wrenching reads I've been reading lately, it was a nice switch.

Loved it. All of it. Will definitely be checking out more from this author in the future.

Ahhhhh! Another great read from Ms. Alana Sapphire. While a complete difference from her MC series, you still can't help but admire the way she weaves a story and makes you fall in love with her characters. In this sexy novella we meet Kelly, who is in love with her boss Rick, who of course has no clue she exists let alone that she's head over heels for him. It is fast paced but it didn't feel rushed to me. It had that feeling of completion one gets after reading a full length novel with an epilogue. I love that Kelly never loses sight of her goals and stands strong in her morals and feelings even if it means walking away from the love of her life. Who doesn't love a heroine with a backbone? There is a little drama towards the end but it is resolved quickly by our sexy hero. Overall a very satisfying short read with plenty of steamy hot sex! Definitely looking forward to the next one!

Peter Trudgill is Professor of Sociolinguistics at the University of Agder. This handy-size reference book contains all of the terms likely to be encountered in a semester's study of sociolinguistics. The definitions are clear, concise and complete, and many examples are provided. Additional maps and diagrams complement the text. Highly recommended.
