Honestly the worst textbook I've ever read.

I understand textbooks are a tool for information; there are no guidelines for what makes a great textbook because let's be serious, it's rare to find a textbook that makes the content interesting enough to read for fun. So these complaints are real, it's not that the content for the CLASS is boring, it's that this book is just poorly put together.

I was really excited for this class since it's an area that I'd like to work in the future, but this book is just horrible horrible. My biggest complaint is its redundancy. I feel like the editor just sent out topics for random nurses to write about, and stuck them in the book without regard to flow, redundancy, etc. If I have to read the words, "Community/public health nursing has three/four components...(insert whatever components each author decides are most important)" one more time I might have a stroke. It's comparable to reading a new book with each chapter, with the same topic but different criteria for what comprises PHN.

Thank goodness my clinical for this class teaches me something, because I'm not getting anything from this. But the kindle version is really nice, it's easy to highlight and you can read all your highlights on a single page without having to skip around, and it has a nifty flashcard tool that I haven't utilized yet, but looks promising. But the textbook itself...yeah no. But I had to get it anyway so what can I do.

Zero stars would be a better choice

Required for class, and hands down, THE worst written text I've ever had the displeasure of reading (or attempted to read)! If I was actually interested in becoming a community health nurse, I might be a little less resentful, but even then, the writers MUST attempt to keep the reader involved and interested in the material they're presenting. This was not the case in this book. So much information is given and so many details are listed that I could not focus properly on what I was suppose to learn. I passed, but that's because the class ran for only 1/2 a semester and I didn't have to have an in-depth knowledge of every aspect the writers presented.

The best thing about this text...sending it packing for trade-in.

This book was excruciatingly boring to read. There were regularly entire paragraphs that literally said nothing. It's a great book if you want to memorize 40 different acronyms of organizations that you will never need to know about per chapter. Even the online review Q's were crap, which is unfortunate, because usually the Evolve Q's are very helpful. Some of them didn't even have the right answer keyed. If your teacher picks this book for your class, then try to just answer the objectives at the beginning of the chapter, know the terms, and look at the tables. Of course all teachers' test Q's are different.

The world-wide operations of the U.S. Army in World War II involved an enormous amount of construction and the performance on a comparable scale of many other missions by the Corps of Engineers. This is the first of four volumes that will describe the participation of the Engineers in the war and the contribution they made toward winning it. Better known to the public in peacetime for its civil works, the Corps by the time of Pearl Harbor had turned almost its full attention to military duties. At home the Engineers took over all military construction, and prepared hundreds of thousands of Engineer troops for a variety of tasks overseas. These tasks included not only construction but also a number of other duties more or less related to engineering both in rear areas and in the midst of battle. In performing these duties in World War II the Army Engineers gained a proud record in combat as well as in service. This first volume tells how the Corps organized and planned and prepared for its tasks, and in particular how it trained its troops and obtained its equipment. The volumes still to be published will describe the huge program of military construction in the United States, and Engineer operations overseas in the European and Pacific areas. One of the objectives of the technical service volumes of the Army's World War II series is to capture the point of view of the service concerned. In doing so the authors of the present history, by thorough research and diligent solicitation of assistance, have also brought to their story a broad perspective, and they have told it with a felicity that should make their work a valuable guide to the Army as a whole, to the thoughtful citizen, and to the Engineers who served and who continue to serve the nation in war and in peace.

About the Author
Blanche D. Coll has a Master of Arts degree in history from the Johns Hopkins University and is a collaborating author of Ships for Victory: Shipbuilding Under the U.S. Maritime Commission in World War II. She has been on the staff of the Historical Division, Office of the Chief of Engineers, since 1948. Jean E. Keith, a Bachelor of Arts from Western Kentucky State College, has done graduate work in history at the Johns Hopkins University. During World War II he served as a gunnery officer on a destroyer in the Pacific. He has been with the Engineer Historical Division since 1951. Herbert H. Rosenthal obtained his Ph.D. degree from Harvard University. During World War II he served in Europe with the 95th Infantry Division. He was associated with the Engineer Historical Division from 1948 to 1953 and is now teaching at Southern Illinois University.

Hi I used this book for preparation and passed pmp in my first attempt. This is the only book I refered. The author has organised the PMI domain model (initiation, planning, executing monitoring & control and closing) which helped me to understand the project management processes and concepts easily and clear the exam effortlessy.

Good book for a layman.

I like this book! It doesn't really go in- depth on the covered diseases, but the information it has is still quite useful. If you are just wondering about diseases from a layman's point of view, then this book is helpful. I doubt it would help much if you were needing very in- depth information, though (such as for medical personnel...)

A really different take on a fantasy trilogy

My All-Time Favorite Novels, NOT Just My Favorite Fantasy

The three novels by R.A. MacAvoy that were issued in _Trio for Lute_ as an omnibus edition are _Daminao_, _Damiano's Lute_, and _Raphael_. I read each of these when they were first published in the early '80's, and they have remained my favorite books for two decades now. Ms. MacAvoy's writing is, well, _luminous_. Her descriptions of settings and landscape have that spare but beautiful quality that you see in the backgrounds of Gothic and Renaissance paintings. Her characters are real people (even the nonhuman ones,) and you become involved and engaged in what happens to them. I won't spoil one of the oddest and most unexpected twists of plot I've ever read by telling you what happens at the end of _Damiano's Lute_, but let's just say that few writers could pull it off. As you'll discover in _Raphael_, "Bertie" MacAvoy did it with astonishing grace. I read a lot of fantasy, and I can't say much of it could move me to tears. These books do. If you like he-man swashbuckling fantasy heroes, these aren't the books for you. But, if you like thoughtful, well-written books where the characters are more important than the magic and derring-do, try to find either the omnibus or the individual books. I believe all but three of her books are out-of-print, although those 3 (not the Damiano books, alas) are available now as both print and ebooks. I've seen Ms. MacAvoy's name on many fantasy fans' lists of favorite authors, yet many readers have never heard of her. She's a "lost" master who deserves to be better known.

Rich and engrossing

This volume is an omnibus of R A Macavoy's gorgeous trilogy: Damiano, Damiano's Lute and Raphael.
Damiano is a renaissance witch (although a Christian - magic use is hereditary in his family, and he fears that he is automatically damned). He uses his powers to grant speech to his Dog Macchiato (Spot)and to call an angel, Raphael, who gives him music lessons on the lute. At least, that is how the story begins. War comes to his sleepy Italian town, and drives him out into the world, which is rather ill prepared for.
The story is written freshly and the characters are all real and well rounded out.
The Black Dragon (from "tea with the...") also makes a nice cameo appearance in the third part in his dragon form.

MUST HAVE PANCE REVIEW BOOK!!!

This book is a MUST HAVE while preparing for the PANCE during clinical rotations. The author gives sample exam questions, which many books do, but he also provides a complete rationale behind each answer choice, enabling the reader to understand why one answer is better than the others. Also, this book is organized by similar symptoms and diseases, as opposed to the traditional way of organizing study aids by body systems. While dividing each section by body systems is efficient for some, it doesn't allow the reader to think like a clinician. In medicine, patients present with a variety of symptoms, often times involving more than one body system, so this book really teaches you to think like a clinician, as opposed to a student. For that reason, I HIGHLY recommend this book.

Specialty PA passes !

Since many of us PA's work in a specialty practice, we need a 'to the point' review book.
This book has 2 parts: the Essential section and the Performance test section.
The Essential section has >200 questions with more than one correct answer followed by a 'You should Know' paragraph that has comparative and contrasting info to distinguish between the diseases /incorrect-correct answers. This was worth everything !!!
The Performance section has >300 questions with one correct answer to put you in the test mode w/a reference page that leads you back to the essential section- an additional review- if it didn't sink in the first time!
The CD is broken down into the fields in which we will be tested- excellent format.
The APPENDIX at the back wraps things up nicely.
Use this book and you'll pass---- I DID !!

ABSOLUTE DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH

I am currently a PA student in the middle of the didactic year and an admitted MEDIOCRE test taker. I believe test taking is a SKILL which can be improved upon. Looking for ways to improve, I sought out various PANCE REVIEWS, like Kaplan and Princeton to improve my test-taking strategies (a pre-requisite in PA school where testing is de rigueur) as well as preparation for the PANCE. Searching for something more, I found out a classmate was using the Davis PA Exam Review now in its 2nd Ed. After further review, my advice is simply-PUT IT AT THE TOP of your list. Did I just yell?? This book is an absolute GEM. I have used other reviews and NONE COMPARE to the unique learning system in this book. The Davis Review takes a multi-dimensional approach to thinking about and MASTERING the concepts the PANCE tests. Most books use outdated, recycled questions- not good. In Davis's book, you actually GET INSIDE THE MIND of a former TEST WRITER FOR PANCE. Did I forget to mention the author, Dr. Diamond, was on the PANCE test-writing committee and personally crafted questions for the PANCE? The book has two parts which make it different. The ESSENTIALS section contains question and answers which LINK all clinical physiological systems seamlessly by providing more than one correct answer to a particular question. The format serves as a REVIEW of material and gets you thinking as a CLINICIAN would in practice. In the appendix, these key SUMMARIES are revisited in detail and represent material most likely tested by the PANCE. After gaining a better understanding of concept and questions, you can head to the PERFORMANCE section and test yourself. Unlike other books that divide questions by system, the PERFORMANCE section is MODELED after the actual PANCE, which throws all systems, GI, CARDIO, NEURO, etc. together in a shotgun fashion. This allows the reader to avoid compartmentalized thinking which does not work in the PANCE. In addition, there is a money-back GUARANTEE along with a companion CD with hundreds of extra questions.
