Replacing my collection of Broadway LPs is a daunting, and expensive task. I've had to be selective, of course, and have usually used my inner juke box as a guide. If there are songs that I just can't get out of my head, I usually buy the CD. "Goodbye Salome" (fun and infectious) and "Sleepy Man" (a gorgeous ballad) are two such songs. But they're just a sampling of this super strong, melodious, unjustly forgotten Broadway score. Another reviewer called it "redneck" music, and perhaps it is to some degree, but that's completely in keeping with the subject matter. For me there's more musical complexity to this than just Flatt & Scruggs hillbilly fiddle scratching. Robert Waldman has composed a real score, one with terrific variety, some haunting melodies -- and the lyrics (by Tony, Pulitzer and Academy Award winner, Alfred Uhry) are simple, yet clever and elegant. The cast is uniformly great, with Barbara Lang's vivid Salome a standout.

My one issue (hence the three stars) is with the audio transfer, which is abysmal. The recording sounds as if it were made in the bottom of a barrel (particularly on an iPod), which has seriously hampered my enjoyment of it. But no-one else has complained about this, so maybe it's just my copy. Hopefully there will be a remastered version out soon; you might want to wait and see.

One of the best OBC recordings I've ever heard. Love Barry Bostwick and Rhonda Coullet. The songs are amazing. Wish I could have seen it when it was playing!

an "unsung" musical hero

The Robber Bridegroom is one of a group of little known but wonderfully performable musicals. This recording, which features Barry Bostwick as the romantic hero of this bluegrass fantasy, gives you a little of the freewheeling flavor of the show. Written by the team that went on to give us Driving Miss Daisy, the story is based on a novella by Southern writer Eudora Welty. The bluegrass score is the foundation for this strange, funny, romantic love story, and the characters include a gentleman-by-day bandit-by-night hero, a wicked stepmother right out of a fairy tale, and a pair of bumbling villians, one of whom is a talking severed head! The songs are singable- listen to the lullaby Sleepy Man or the haunting Deeper in the Woods- the plot, hilarious. If you're a music theatre person, give this a try.

A serious reader would do better buying a newer publication

This book is written in the old style of inter-war histories. Lots of old world British opinions on German national character and what the author thought the foreigners were thinking without any factual based conclusions. There are not any references, just a bibliography - presumably what the author read before writing this book. I think this book is a history introduction for juvenile readers - not for experienced adults who are reading for new information or refreshing insights or observations. A serious reader would do better buying a newer publication. Try Max Hastings publications.

Short History on the Luftwaffe Lands on the Mark

John Killen's "The Luftwaffe: A History" is a brief but satisfying overview of the German Luftwaffe. German military personalities who helped create and then doom the German air force, strategic and tactical blunders on the part of Hitler, Goering, Miich and others, as well as the history of the individual planes which comprised the backbone of this formidable force are evenly presented and fairly balanced.

While no means an exhaustive history of the Luftwaffe, Killen's book is an excellent introductory history. It moves right along from the flying aces of WWI, the rebuilding of the German air arm after the Versailles Treaty through to the end of WW II. While told from a British view, Killen is even-handed in his appraisal of the adversaries strategies and key figures.

As with all aspects of the German Wehrmacht, The success of the Luftwaffe was fatally compromised by Hitler's military amateurism and impatience, and an intoxication with tactical Blitzkrieg tactics over more sober strategic considerations. The most startling thing I learned was the insistence by Goering and Odet (the Luftwaffe's chief technical guru) on having every plane in the Luftwaffe, even a planned strategic bomber, being capable of acting as dive bombers!

Trash for Cash

This book needs a CD. I purchased the book to learn PageMaker, but was referred to a website to download the required files. Some of the files were downloadable, but the instructor files were not accessable -- and these files are necessary for completing the assignments.
Unfortunately, this book is used by many instructors. My instructor has been promising us the files for weeks on disk, but so far hasn't delivered.
If you want to learn PageMaker, buy Classroom in a Book by Adobe and save yourself a lot of heartache (It's got a CD with everything you need). Besides, Mr. Proot's style of instruction is less than clear, and while this download the files yourself approach may save the author some $$$ in not having to include a CD, it's a very weird way of doing business. The book is a ripoff. Big time.

Wrong! Don't listen to the guy under me!!

This book is great!!! Downloading the necessary files has never been so easy.The instructions to go the site to download the files is in the book. This guy under me is telling a lie. You don't need the instructor files. That's for instructors ONLY. You download the STUDENT files on the site. These are the files you need. That is all. This book is very clear. I learned how to create my own brochures, .pdf manuals, reports, etc., just by using this book. I will be learning Flash MX using the Illustrated Series. Don't give this book a one just because you and your professor don't know how to access the internet. I suggest you and your instructor take an Intro course in computer science first before using this book.
