The Social Contract and The First and Second Discourses, by Jean-Jacques Rousseau

Jean-Jacques Rousseau's ideas about society, culture and government are pivotal in the history of political thought. His works are as controversial as they are relevant today. This volume brings together three of Rousseau's most important political writings - The Social Contract and The First Discourse (Discourse on the Sciences and Arts) and The Second Discourse (Discourse on the Origin and Foundations of Inequality) - and presents essays by major scholars that shed light on the dimensions and implications of these texts.

Bad translation of Second Discourse
By Adrian Lo
The translation of the Second Discourse is particularly bad in this edition. There are plenty of mistakes in the translation, including wrong verb tense [1], omitted keyword [2], and different parts of speech [3].

[1] For example, on page 74, the phrase "J'aurais voulu me choisir une patrie..." in the past conditional is incorrectly translated as "I should have made choice of a country..." rather than "I would have wanted to choose for myself a country..."

[2] On the same page, the phrase "...garantie par une position encore plus heureuse de la crainte de devenir elle-même la conquête d'un autre Etat..." is translated as "...secured, by a still more fortunate situation, from becoming itself the conquest of other states...", omitting the phrase "de la crainte de" (of the worry of).

[3] On the same page as well, "...fussent, non seulement libres, mais dignes de l'être."' is translated as "...were not only free, but worthy of their freedom." While the French original talks about the state of being 'free' ("dignes de l'être"), the translators rendered it as a noun instead ("their freedom").

I only picked out three examples from the first six lines of the same page, and did not even bother to point out other errors in the examples I listed. Nevertheless I hope my point is clear: find a better translation if you can.

A must read for every college educated person
By Dr. Michael J. Storek
These books are pretty thin in volume, yet contain many profound ideas that propelled modern democracy to become the most common social order in the West. Although Rousseau famously states that a true democracy is possible only for nation of Gods and he would not characterize current democracies as such, it is worth of reading, given the clarity of his thoughts and few remarkable predictions - e.g. regarding Corsica and Russia.

Good translation, slightly abridged
By d4austus
It is very helpful to bring these three texts together in one volume. My only complaint is that this volume does not include all of the endnotes to the Second Discourse, and some of those it does include are incomplete.

To be sure, Rousseau says that, for some readers, reading the notes is unnecessary. The question is whether you consider yourself such a reader.
