Century #2: Star of Stone, by Pierdomenico Baccalario

In the second installment of the Century Quartet, Italian author P. D. Baccalario continues the mystery that will take four cities and four extraordinary kids to solve.

Four kids. A wooden top. And four postcards with secret instructions.

New York City, March 15
Another mysterious artifact reunites Harvey from New York, Elettra from Rome, Mistral from Paris, and Sheng from Shanghai in their attempt to save the world. When they meet people who knew Alfred Van Der Berger, the murdered professor who sent them on their quest in Rome, they realize that the challenge is far from over. And when they discover a series of four postcards written in code years ago by the professor himself, their destiny becomes even clearer.

The cards send the kids all over New York City, through old libraries and abandoned tunnels, in search of the Star of Stone, an ancient object fundamentally connected to the earth. But a new set of villains, predators of Manhattan nightlife, will do anything to stop them....

From School Library Journal
Gr 5-9–This second book in the series reunites the four children who need to save the world, this time bringing them together in Harvey's home city of New York. When Harvey realizes that he is being followed and in danger, he is joined by his friends Elettra, Mistral, and Sheng, and they attempt to follow the clues left by mysterious professor Alfred Van Der Berger, learning more about their huge task and meeting new allies and enemies. Readers will be intrigued by the Manhattan setting, the clues and codes, and the sense of danger and urgency that follows the characters through their adventures. A 16-page full-color section in the middle of the book provides maps, pictures, and additional enigmatic clues. The translation maintains a consistently tense tone. Relationships continue to develop as the characters learn more about their once-in-a-century task and the group that preceded them, providing realism and balance to the many all-out-action scenes.–Beth L. About the Author
Pierdomenico Baccalario was born in Acqui Terme, a beautiful little town in the Piedmont region of northern Italy. He grew up in the middle of the woods with his three dogs and his black bicycle.

He started writing in high school. When lessons got particularly boring, he’d pretend he was taking notes, but he was actually coming up with stories. He also met a group of friends who were crazy about role-playing games, and with them he invented and explored dozens of fantastic worlds.

He studied law at university but kept writing and began publishing novels. After he graduated, he also worked with museums and cultural projects, trying to make dusty old objects tell interesting stories. He began to travel and change horizons: Celle Ligure, Pisa, Rome, Verona...

He loves seeing new places and discovering new lifestyles, although, in the end, he always returns to the comfort of familiar ones.

From AudioFile
This second book in the Century Quartet reunites four children from four cities--Harvey from New York City, Mistral from Paris, Sheng from Shanghai, and Elettra from Rome--in New York on their quest to find the Star of Stone. Carrington MacDuffie gives the four children distinctive, youthful voices with subtle accents that reflect their native lands. Her timing is perfect for conveying tension and a sense of danger and for building suspense as the children decipher four postcards written in numeric code, which give them instructions as they move through the city while being pursued by a host of villains. Overall, MacDuffie's performance is just right for this fast-paced mystery. C.R.A. © AudioFile 2011, Portland, Maine

excellent set of 4 books
By Amazon Customer
The Century Quartet is a great set of books, that were a very fast read. I could easily see kids being pulled into the story, as it is sort of like a "Da Vinci Code" for kids. The author even seems to crack the fourth wall, in a way which establishes the setting as being modern times even better, by making reference to the Da Vinci Code and other "current" events in the early 21st century. Broken into 4 parts, with the 4 kids being on a quest to find 4 objects. Can't wait to share these with my nieces and nephews.

Love It -- mystery, danger, great characters...
By The Invisible Pam
"Star of Stone" is the second book in the Century series. As the mystery continues, Elettra, Mistral, Sheng and Harvey are brought together in the New York City as they try to unravel the story behind the ancient tops and the Chaldean map.

Personally, I love this story. It's smart and wickedly clever, presenting all sorts of interesting information about ancient cults, antiques, architecture and art. Truly, Baccalario effortlessly manages to sneak in history lessons and connect elements of modern life to those of the ancients.

"Star of Stone" also stands out, in my experience, in not being one of 'those' kidlit books where the author talks down to the reader. It's the subject matter, therefore, that's appropriate for any age, and not a case of a watered down narrative.

Highly recommend.
Tween-and-up readers who like mysteries and danger should check out this series.

THE SKINNY:::
An intelligent, well plotted story of Good-vs-Evil that's fraught with tension. The main characters are well developed and secondary characters are fascinating.

"Star of Stone" is written in The Present Tense (as is Wolf Hall), a form some readers might not have run across unless they've read quite a bit. (It's worth perusing if only to thwart Phillip Pullman for whom the form apparently presents a personal writing challenge.)

Appropriate for Tweens on up.

I think this book compares well to Riordan's "Percy Jackson" series, although it's style is a tad more mature.

Next stop... Paris!

Great series from author of Ulysses Moore.
By Aunt Deb
I love Pierdomenico Baccalario's books. He wrote the Ulysses Moore series for Scholastic which ended abruptly. When I found Book 1 of the Century Quartet and noted the author I was thrilled. Couldn't read the 1st book fast enough. Book 2 Star of Stone didn't disappoint. The 4 friends brought together in Book 1 continue their saga as they search for the star of stone. Baccalario keeps the mystery going really well and the adventure he adds keeps the book moving. And he sneaks in a Ulysses Moore mention along the way. Love it!!!
