About the Author
Sue Tyson-Ward is a Portuguese language consultant and writer of more than twenty books on the Portuguese language, country, and people. She has lived, studied, worked, and traveled in Portugal and Brazil over the past twenty-five years. Tyson-Ward is also an examiner of Portuguese in the United Kingdom and has acted as a consultant to the BBC's acclaimed Talk Portuguese TV series. She currently teaches college in the United Kingdom.

Light on verbs

I'm a big fan of the Practice Makes Perfect verb tenses books. Unfortunately, that book is not available for Portuguese. I bought this book hoping to get similar help with verbs. Unfortunately this book only covers present tense verbs and to go + infinitive for future tense. That's awfully basic -- less than what you'd get in the first half of a high school Portuguese 101 class.

A Miss from McGraw Hill's (usually excellent) practice makes perfect series.

I rarely write reviews for stuff I buy through Amazon, but I have strong feelings about this book. I regret the purchase.
I taught myself Spanish, and a little bit of French, Hebrew, Persian (Farsi) and Japanese. I'm not a linguist, but I know a little something about good and bad materials.
Basically ... the book is very disappointing. It only covers the present tense. No past tense (preterit or imperfect). No future tense. No subjunctive. No perfect tenses. But despite that, I could still get use from the book if it weren't for one thing:
None of the vocabulary that you need to complete exercises is introduced before the exercise. So: "I go to the store" or, "I work downtown" unless you know the Portuguese words for "store" (loja) or "downtown" (centro), you have to look at the answers -- which defeats the purpose of doing the exercises.
So, IMHO, you should pass on this book.

This book contains well thought out lessons and explanations that include grammar and sentence structure. contains both European and Brazilian.
