About the Author
Pieter Cullis, PhD, is director of the Life Sciences Institute at the University of British Columbia, chairman of the B.C. Personalized Medicine Initiative, and a professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at UBC. He has a PhD in physics from UBC and did a post-doc at Oxford University in biochemistry. He is also a recipient of the Prix Galien, Canada’s top award for developing new drugs to treat disease. Iva Cheung holds an MSc from the University of British Columbia and works as a freelance editor. Both live in Vancouver.

Insights into the new science of genetics and our health and medical care

Maybe we can escape our genes but you cannot escape the revolution happening in medicine as it relates to the use of genetic technologies. Every week there is an announcement on the radio or television about some new genetic test as part of personalised medicine . The problem is how to make head or tail of all these announcements and what to expect to see clinically in your hospital or clinic. To help make sense of the deluge of information this book by Pieter Cullis gives the reader an original view of genetics that is written for any reader. Started as a response to the question: “what is this personalised medicine thing?” the book is not a textbook but is stories about people and their discoveries as the science of genetics has made its way into clinical practice. The use of these anecdotes to describe the important discoveries in medicine over the centuries helps the reader understand more about how the science of medicine has advanced and puts into perspective the innovations of personalised medicine. I am relatively new in this field and this book was a genuine pleasure to read as it gave me a new perspective on this exciting field of discovery and practice.

This is a beautifully written book with clarity and humor that is easily accessible to the general public poised to benefit from the Personalized Medicine Revolution. Dr. Cullis clearly articulates a realistic vision for both the near and distant future that will change the practice of medicine. We, the public, will be active participants. I purchased 5 copies for bioinformaticians, medical students and family members, who will benefit from reading this book.

In Pieter Cullis’s entertaining and smart new book, The Personalized Medicine Revolution, he lays out the transformation in health care and medicine that is at our doorstep. The new era of personalized, preventative medicine has arrived, and it is astonishing how medicine as we know it – for doctors and patients alike – is being vastly changed.
He defines personalized medicine as being based on the unique molecular makeup of your individual self and a molecular-level understanding of the disorder you may have. It’s your molecular profile, or digital health score, if you will. Simply put, our genetics – our DNA – are being examined in different ways, in different parts of our bodies, to discern what diseases we may be highly susceptible to, and what medications may wreak havoc on us with debilitating side effects.
There is a huge wealth of information in your blood which hasn't been utilized yet.
A well-known example is the choice that actress Angelina Jolie made to have a prophylactic double mastectomy. Genetic analysis of her DNA revealed she was a carrier of the BRCA-1 mutation, and her specific risk of developing breast cancer was 87%. This is an example of a genetic biomarker predicting the likelihood of disease possibility, in this instance cancer. She now has a risk of less than 5%. Not non-existent, but an astronomical improvement.
Biomarkers based on genetic data only provide information on your risk of disease – not whether you have it. But biomarkers from proteins in your saliva, blood and urine can tell you what disease you actually have. There is a huge wealth of information in your blood which hasn’t be utilized yet – but that is changing. The ultimate goal of this medical revolution is to predict and identify disease before it becomes acutely life threatening, and knowing which medicines will work for your unique genetic makeup.
I am excited to see how our health care system and patient experience transforms over the next 5 years!
